Rural Roots of George

The peaceful grounds where our first president was born. Another gem on Virginia's Northern Neck, minutes from historic Montross.

Sits on an inlet of the Potomac better known as "Pope's Creek." This area is where George Washington grew up until he was about 6-7 years old. There are daily tours of a replicated house as the old one burnt down in a fire. You will see beautiful herb gardens that utilized the same herbs as they did in Washington's... More

Thank you so much for the wonderful review! You painted a fine picture of the park. Really appreciate your mentioning the Jr. Ranger Program. We have several different JRPs ranging from Paleo to the present and kids can earn special badges for each program completed--lots of fun! More

Decided to take an impromptu day trip on a beautiful February day and happened upon the George Washington Birthplace site for President's Day weekend. It was not too crowded. All of the National Park employees we encountered were friendly and very helpful. My husband and I decided to make a full day of it and explored the scenic grounds. Animals... More

Beautiful location, excellent displays - a must-see destination for anyone interested in our nation's colonial history. Superb staff. Great place for a picnic, too.

We drove to the monument on a late Monday morning. To our dismay, the visitors center and the restrooms were closed and locked when we got there. The farmstead and grounds are beautiful, and the towering Washington monument at the traffic circle was impressive. This is a nice homage to the Washington family at Pope's Creek.

Thank you so much for bringing the restroom situation to our attention. Although the visitor center itself is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays during the winter, the restrooms should have been open. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and will make sure this situation does not happen again in the future. So glad you had an opportunity to experience other... More

I visited the birthplace home of our Founding Father in Late January. The property is well maintained and they do not charge an admission fee. The live stock on site was surprising (abundance of sheep, cows, and ducks) and the proximity to Colonial Beach downtown was only a 5 minute drive.

You can really spend a while here with all their is to to explore and best of all, it will not brake the budget and it is free! I would suggest first stopping at the visitors center to get some info on where to start. They have a great group of rangers there that are very informative. There is a... More

A great chance to have a history lesson few are given in school. Wonderful tour guide who really enjoys what she is doing. Tidbits you will not find in books. Beautiful views and a walking trail to boot. A must see historical home.

Our park ranger was really into his message. It was almost like being back in Washington's time. We actually came back the next afternoon as time had cut our visit short-got to talk with that park ranger and had the opportunity to tell him what a wonderful job he had done. Movie on site was also very well done and... More

Beautiful setting and the grounds were immaculate! The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. We were also able to see Heritage breed horses, oxen, pigs and sheep similar to what would have been here during George's childhood. Make the time to watch the video, very informative!
