museum covers history of the area. I was expecting a bigger museum. it is an old house and it is downtown Fairfax. It has a lot of old mementos and photos from families that settled the area and keepsakes and war mementos and tours and an elevator. I have bad knees. The curator was a really nice man. I saw... Set in a beautifully restored mansion, the Fairfax museum promises to provide a panoramic picture of the growth of a small town into a major suburb. There is a lot of history to cover from 18th century plantations to the fastest growing suburban area in the US after World War 2. Unfortunately, the displays are minimal because of their location... Took my wife to this museum to help her understand the area in which I was born and raised. I was born in and lived in an anti-bellum house just west of Fairfax. Steeped in US history and tradition, Fairfax is one of the centers of US history. This museum provides an excellent lesson in that history.

Nice little museum. It is free to the public. A lot of photographs from old days about old town Fairfax area and some historical artifacts. My nephew who was visiting from out of town really enjoyed it.

We stopped in mainly because this is the Visitor Center for Fairfax. The Docents were extremely helpful and spent a lot of time explaining what there was to see in Fairfax and the surrounding area including Washington DC. We picked up a bunch of flyers and brochures and went off on an adventure.

This museum is hidden away within the city of Fairfax with limited parking. It contains limited artifacts dating back to colonial times and isn't worth the trip nor the cost of admission if you have other things in mind to see also.

On busy Main Street across the street from a TJMaxx shopping center is this excellent, free museum and visitors' center for the city of Fairfax. There is parking adjacent to the museum which is open daily from 9 am - 5 pm. The first floor has rotating exhibitions and the second floor presents the history of Fairfax from the Revolutionary... We toured this while we were touring Fredericksburg all day! I'm sure we brought some thing home from it we couldn't resist.

On the ground floor, the museum was showing a traveling exhibit of Vietnam War art and that was good to see. On the second floor, both Revolutionary War and Civil War history was covered from the standpoint of Fairfax. The first skirmish of the Civil War took play just outside the museum which was the courthouse at the time -... More

This really is a hidden gem off Main St. in Fairfax City. While small, it is a reputable museum with much in the way of Civil War info, info about Fairfax County & surrounding areas & souvenirs to purchase. If you're looking for something to do on one of those cold or rainy days, why not stop in...
