Absolutely beautiful! Fifth visit to this section hike and brought two friends that have never been here. We loved the vistas from the balds, the wild ponies, and find it one of the prettiest sections of the AT of the 1000 miles I have been on.

First this place is "away from it all". So it takes a while to get there, but it is wonderful. There are a couple of hidden waterfalls, wild ponies, gorgeous trails, huckleberries, and lots of just simply nature.

Did a couple of nice nights of camping in the bare tree campground in the Mount Rogers national recreation area. The campsite hosts were very nice, and kept order. Campground is very clean. Main problem was that the swimming area was very muddy. The lake needs to be cleaned out.The bottom is full of leaves, and it is really hard... More

This place is so beautiful! The visitors center and grounds are great. The Appalachian Trail cuts through here and has stunning vistas. This is a pretty easy hike for non hikers as well. There's a loop behind the visitors center and a great place for a picnic. Highly recommend!!!

beautiful views of the mountains. Very rustic. Roads leading in were good. Bird watchers and hikers would love this place.

Beautiful area to hike, but the visitors center is closed on the weekends. Seventy-two miles of the Appalachian Trail run through the area so you will meet AT hikers. We love to hike, so we enjoyed the area.

Encompassing the top few highest elevations in Virginia, Mount Rogers, Pine Mt., Whitetop and other prominences, the views can be anything from expansive to enclosed spruce/fir forests. Great to visit any time of year and lots of opportunities. Friendly and helpful staff at visitor's center too.

We have been here many times as a family. A favorite is the hike from Grayson Highlands state park up to Masse Gap and on to Mount Rogers. We love the camping area in GHSP. There are wooded campsites with variety. We have also hiked in on the AT past the Old Orchard shelter. We camped up on Piney ridge... More

As an avid highpointer, I hiked to the top of Mount Rogers this autumn. I started at Massie Gap in Grayson Highlands State Park and then hit the Appalachian Trail for the bulk of the hike. It is roughly nine miles round-trip. The weather in September was good and although there is some elevation gain, it is not super-strenuous. The... More
