Belle Grove is located in the northern Shenandoah Valley near Middletown, Virginia. It is an authentic 1797 Manor House, was built by Major Isaac Hite and his wife Nelly Madison Hite, sister of President James Madison. Major Hite, grandson of Shenandoah Valley Pioneer Jost Hite, expanded his original 483 acres to a prosperous 7500 acre plantation, growing wheat, raising cattle and Merino sheep, and operating a large distillery and several mills.

My wife and I stopped in to visit Belle Grove Plantation after a night's stay in Strasburg. I wasn't aware of Belle Grove until I saw a flyer at the Hotel Strasburg. I'm glad I discovered it. The plantation is historically significant from both a colonial and Civil War standpoint. The house is magnificent and our tour guide was a... More

This is really a beautiful historic house. The view is breathtaking and the amount of history that surrounds this place is amazing. It's pretty incredible that this house survived considering how old it is but it is well maintained and the tour guide was very knowledgeable. I very much enjoyed my visit. They also mentioned they have events on the... More

We found this gem in the Virginia countryside along the I-66/81 corridor on a hot May morning. Its immaculate grounds, garden, and historic outbuildings offer a taste of what's inside this limestone structure nestled between the Blue Ridge, Massanutten and Allegheny mountain ranges. Belle Grove is beautifully maintained and enhanced by period furniture, paintings and artifacts. After a 15-minute orientation... More

We enjoyed the tour of Belle Grove plantation. The staff was very knowledgeable and gave plenty of time to ask questions. Be sure to check out the Civil War bullet holes in the front porch columns.

Belle Grove is a beautifully restored plantation house that had been owned by Jame's Madison;s sister and often visited by James and Dolly. Although a battle was fought nearby, the plantation house survived and provides a glimpse into the 1700's. Docents were knowledgeable and there weren't many visitors the day I was there so the tour wasn't crowded or rushed.... More

An historical mansion that survived the Civil War and earlier was home to James Madison's sister and family. The docent-led tour was very well done: documented tales of the fascinating role the house played in the past. Not a lot of house on view, despite its apparent size. An excellent shop in the beamed and atmospheric basement, well-stocked with local... More

As a historic attraction Belle Grove has been well documented by other reviewers. But I do want to echo that the Belle Grove Plantation is the kind of authentic preservation a visitor would expect from a National Trust for Historic Preservation property. The fact that the building survived, while being within a major Civil War battlefield, is quite impressive. Docent... More

Made the trip from Harper's Ferry, well worth it. Very cold day so the house was cold, but the views and history made up for it. The restoration is well done. Learned about several periods of American history. National Sheepdog Trials coming in 2017!

Spent a few pleasant hours here. The tour guide wad great. Very personable and informative without being "too much" as you can run into I these places. The admission price at $12 is a little steep...but it's a great house and the fact that you can enter each room is really great.

This is a nice place to stop and check out some history. The rolling fields around the house are lovely. The docent gave a nice tour. The tours are every hour, quarter past. A ranger was there giving a talk about the area but we had to get on the road and couldn't listen to him and then wait for... More
