Learned a lot about the development of Smithfield. The historical slant was obvious and easily followed -- less of a set of artifacts, and more of a historical timeline. I did not know that originally peanuts were king in Smithfield before a pier fire and the peanut business moved to Suffolk.

We stopped by the visitors center and asked a few questions and got a map and some other brochures of the area. The person behind the desk told us were to park and some local attractions not to miss.

Smithfield is the home of the Smithfield Farms, and is a very friendly village with many historic homes that have been well maintained. The town is about 1/2 miles long, and a walking tour is most appropriate. There are several nice restaurants to tempt the visitor's palate, along with a bakery and ice cream shop. There are 8 case and... More

We are staying in Williamsburg and decided on a side trip to Smithfield VA. As we usually do we went to the visitor center to get the lay of the land and some advice. The people were most helpful. They had great humor and were very knowledgable about their city. We walked the Main Street stopping in the locally owned... More

The Visitor Center is on your right when you drive down Main Street. We were given information about where to park and what to visit as well as details of the six restaurants in Smithfield. Two added bonuses: clean rest rooms and a center displaying attractive local arts and crafts.

This Visitors Center was very informative, the staff person was personable and interested in helping us find what would suit us during our visit. She provided us with what we asked for and suggested information based on our conversation she thought we might like. She was well informed and clearly had personal experience with the attractions in Smithfield. In addition... More

We were visiting Williamsburg and wanted to take the Jamestown Ferry and see something different. We visited the cute little town of Smithfield. We started at the visitor center and met very friendly staff who gave us great recommendations. The art gallery was really nice too. One of the artist in residence was really great at showing her artwork and... More
