The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

Saw Peter and the Starcatcher and I laughed so hard I had tears. I was invited by a friend. I'm now buying tickets to bring two guests of my own and share the great performance. Absolutely a perfect performance.

I had been told about this theatre and, as we were passing through Staunton, decided to stop by. The very polite and informative lady on the front desk allowed us to view the interior of the theatre as we had just missed one of the...More

Attending the American Shakespeare Center's production of "Love's Labor's Lost" was definitely a highlight of my visit to Staunton and anyone visiting Staunton should make a point of attending a performance in this magnificent theater. The cast of actors make any evening special with their...More

Me and my family were there in December to see the Christmas carol by Charles Dickens and it was definitely an amazing experience. We were able to sit on stage so we were used as props during the play. The staff was delightful and they...More

We saw performances of all 3 plays they are currently doing - Love's Labour's Lost, Much Ado about Nothing, and Peter and the Starcatcher. My daughter really enjoyed Peter (I'm not a big fan of Peter Pan stories, so I don't have a real opinion.)...More

We had the great pleasure of attending a performance of "Much Ado About Nothing" recently at the American Shakespeare Center's Black Friars Playhouse. It is a replica of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and plays are performed in the style of Shakespeare's day, very few props, lights...More

This is my second visit to the ASC. Both performances were comedies, and both were wonderfully entertaining. The cast is multi-talented as they perform a variety of roles (just as was true in Shakespeare's time) and they entertain the audience with music and dance prior...More

We recently enjoyed Peter and the Starcatchers - how fun is this?!!! My date, who does love theater, was kind of tepid about this one - until we sat down! The doors open 30 minutes before the show, and the entire time we were entertained...More

I take the family a few times each summer while we pass through VA. This past summer we saw Much Ado About Nothing as well as Peter and the Starcatchers. Both were wonderful for the entire family. It was amazing to watch Greg Bostrom as...More

Yes the seats in front of the stage do have individual backs. In addition one can find a limited number of sleeve cushions to fit over the backs to make them even more comfortable. Ask the ushers where they are

To be honest Tom it would depend on the play. I think it may be hard for the 5 year old to sit through a play. 10 and 12, I think would get a kick out of it. I would call the theatre and ask them what they suggest, they are... More
