The Blackfriars Playhouse is the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre. "Stunning", says Frommer's. Located in historic downtown Staunton, VA, this 300-seat Renaissance theatre offers productions of Shakespeare and classic plays year round that the Washington Post says are "shamelessly entertaining" and the Boston Globe says are "phenomenal...bursting with energy”.

We attended a matinee performance over the holiday weekend and enjoyed the theatre very much. First, great theatre space and intimate scale. There isn't a bad seat in the house and one feels very close to the performers. A different dynamic than usual theatre set up. The actors were terrific. Very professional all around. We also enjoyed the clever blend... More

On a recent trip to Staunton, the wife and I decided to take in a mid-day play of "King Lear" at this..the world’s only recreation of Shakespeare’s own indoor theatre, the Blackfriars Playhouse.  The 300-seat Renaissance-style theatre was the perfect setting as it allowed us to feel as if we were physically on the stage..spoiler alert!!!...several patrons were actually invited... This is my first time to watch a Shakespeare play and it was King Lear. It was such a great play with passionate actors and actresses, beautiful theatre and nice custome. Highly recommended if u come to Stauton!

Great theatre, no bad site lines, close to the action. Cast was wonderful, and great at getting the audience involved. Come early for the music before the show.

We enjoyed watching Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. We haven't frequented theatre in the past but we saw this and decided to give it a try. So glad we did. It was very laid back, open bar available, and as they warn with this particular play, there is inappropriate language and situations making this adult content. We had a great time.... More

We had tickets for Twelfth Night on Saturday and it was incredible. The theater is so beautiful and the production was flawless. I especially loved the music /singing before and during the intermission. The mood was set --the play was so perfectly performed that I simply cant believe i haven't been here before. Our seats were in the front row... More

A must do while in Staunton. We saw Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. Super fun, the actors we very good and so energetic. We sat in the second to last row-main level (well it was slightly raised). These seats were fabulous-you can see the expressions on the cast.

We saw 3 plays the weekend we visited: Twelfth Night, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, and King Lear. What fun! The theater is beautiful, the cast are truly talented, and the staff are ever so friendly. Highly recommend center seats, near row E or I. Front row can be a bit intimidating, so if you don't want to interact do not... More

We drove to Staunton to visit the Blackfriar's Theater at the American Shakespeare Center. The show presented that night was Henry VI part II. This theater is an exact replica of the Shakespeare's indoor theater in London, and it was beautiful. The cast did an excellent job with this very difficult play. The show was staged as it would have... More

i've seen three Shakespeare productions at this theater and each one was excellent. The company makes the plays very accessible, even to people who have never seen a Shakespeare play before. i was especially impressed by the music this time. Highly recommended for all.
