Preservation Virginia acquired the Cape Henry Lighthouse in 1930 when Congress deeded the house and 1.77 Acres of land to the organization in order to preserve it and make it accessible to the public. Over the years lighthouse and its surroundings have been restored including repairing the lantern after damage from Hurricane Barbara in 1953, repairing the damaged original Aquia sandstone and restoring the surrounding dunes.

Today, visitors to the Cape Henry Lighthouse can climb to the top of the tower to enjoy spectacular views of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean.

two lighthouses, the historical one that you can go up in and the one that actually works that you can't. there is a little museum on the property telling about it and you can actually go up into it and see out into the bay. it's a good adventure on a day trip.

After we went through the military clearance, my husband and I drove to Cape Henry's Lighthouse. This connected the history, respect and preservation of the Eastern Shores.

This is a side trip from a Va beach function we attended. We found a groupon for half off the entrance fee so it was just $10 for all 4 of us to get in. There are 2 lighthouses but u can only get in and climb the old one which was built in the 1700s. This was the first... More

There is not a lot going on in the Virginia Beach area in November so we drove to the military base to see this lighthouse. The guards definitely spend some time making sure you are not going to cause harm but it wasn't a long wait. (Probably longer in the summer.) They give you 2 hours to go to the... More

Getting on base actually took longer than the climb itself. Have your driver's license, registration and insurance ready when you get to the guard gate. Quick search, more like a look through, and we were on our way. Take your time and read the signs along the way. Historical markers tell the story. It wasn't crowded at all on a... More

Cape Henry Lighthouse is an icon for the Tidewater area. It is a tremendous reminder of shipping in ages past.

Wonderful place to visit, it is on an active base so be sure to have registration of car as well as proof of insurance as well as identification of individuals, 191 steps to top on spiral staircase but with a couple rest stops

Took our 10 and 15 year old boys to see the lighthouse. They walked all the way up and saw the beach from the top of the lighthouse. The history was informative and the gift shop had some nice souvenirs. We bought the tickets on Groupon.

Wonderful visit once you cleared security. The lighthouse is on a active military base. The military staff are professional and courteous. The lighthouse claim to be the first built in the US. Very enjoyable time.
