Preservation Virginia acquired the Cape Henry Lighthouse in 1930 when Congress deeded the house and 1.77 Acres of land to the organization in order to preserve it and make it accessible to the public. Over the years lighthouse and its surroundings have been restored including repairing the lantern after damage from Hurricane Barbara in 1953, repairing the damaged original Aquia sandstone and restoring the surrounding dunes. Today, visitors to the Cape Henry Lighthouse can climb to the top of the tower to enjoy spectacular views of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean.

I love lighthouses, and this is one of America's oldest. You can climb it too! Plus this is a twofer. There are actually 2 lighthouses here. The oldest is the one that's open. You can only photograph the "modern" 1800's version from the outside. Do...More

For a fee you can climb to the top of this 200+ year old tower and get a great view of the surrounding areas. It's inside an active military base, so bring ID and be prepared to have your vehicle searched!

Not directly, no. Since the lighthouse is on military property, you have to have some way to access the base. If a cab driver was military, e.g. retired, it might be possible, but I don't know how they handle that situation... More

The gift shop and overlook are accessible but the lighthouse has steep steps to reach it. Also the spiral staircase inside the lighthouse are not accessible.
