Description:

Big Walker Lookout is the designated overlook of the Big Walker Mountain...

Big Walker Lookout is the designated overlook of the Big Walker Mountain National Forest Scenic Byway that is on US-52 between exit 52 & exit 47 of I-77 in Virginia between Bland, Va & Wytheville, Va. It is just 12 miles north of I-81 from exit 70. This is one of the few accessable places in the east where you have a 360 degree view of the mountain valleys & farm-scapes of the Appalachian Mountains. Big Walker Lookout features the BW Country Store with 25+ artisans & crafters' handmade works. It is a Crooked Road Affiliated Venue that features free, live concerts every Saturady & Sunday from May through October. We also feature artists & crafters demonstrating their talents on the front porch every weekend throughout the spring, summer & fall. We feature homemade ice cream, farm fresh fudge & delicious chocolates. It is a great hiking, biking and trail biking trail-head for beginner & expert adventurers. Big Walker is a historic pass where, during the Civil War, Molly Tynes traveled to Wytheville to warn of the impending Toland's Raid. It is a Virginia Birding and Wildlife view area and a raptor migration path. Come by for a visit. We are open year round 10-5 and later in the summer.

The best part is the view. We enjoyed the gift shop. We'd like to visit again maybe during a peak time.

Wow, what a view, big mountain to drive up and get to. We found it by change because of a detour. Decided to shop, awesome view, cool look out tower but a charge fee. Has a nice country store there also . If your in the area worth the stop. Caution ,if your a flat land driver it's a trip... More

Now THAT is a good idea. I guess my next car is a sports car. Varoom!! Thanks for visiting. We love for folks to find us "by accident"! Sometimes the interstate just gets clogged and US-52 is the best alternative. Thanks for your comments. More

Brrrr... We went up the tower on a day when it was around 40 degrees outside. It wasn't too cold at the base, but the wind got stronger - and colder - as we went up. Would be much nicer on a warm day. It's $6 per adult to go up, $4 for child. There's a swinging bridge which spans... More

This was a scary attraction with small children. Some of the stair treads were weathered and things could be added to make it a bit safer. Once I had a pep talk with the kids on what I expected we were ready for the climb. The views were gorgeous, but I was a little concerned about the whole structure.

Thanks for your Tripadvisor comment. Yes that tower is very tall and imposing. It is completely safe as you found. The view from the top is really spectacular as you saw. Probably the best 360 degree, mountain panarama in the east. You might be reasured to know the tower has been there since the mid 50's and we have never... More

Stop by to have some yummy ice cream or have a picnic overlooking the beautiful valley below. There are tons of craft items inside the store and local authors books are carried. Basically it's an amazing view with tons of perks.

Decent place with a high tower you can climb in the mountains. Often overrun by kids who clash with the serene quiet of the mountains. The gift shop is overpriced as are most gift shops and the merchandise is pretty run of the mill standard fare. Stuff with the name of the place on it, mugs, keychains and some cute... More

Typical mountain country store with good pricing on local products and great entertainment with the mountain blue grass music (live) for the week end of the local festival

We lucked out with perfect clear, cool weather...ideal for the views offered at the top of this funky, creaky 100' tower. The general store is fun to browse, and the treats offered at the counter are delicious. The ladies there are sweet and a lot of fun to talk with. Well worth the short drive from I-85.

We did not climb the tower, but had a wonderful view of the mountains with some color starting to show up. It did not take but about 30-40 minutes to drive up from Wytheville.

I have grown up in Wytheville and this place has always been here. Scenery is beautiful. Windy days are hard to focus but still nice. The tower looks interesting, I am afraid of heights so I have not climbed it. Try the ice cream or purchase one one the candy bar breads. All in all a very nice place to... More
