This is a great place to take a quiet walk or just get out and enjoy the river. Be sure to drive around and find the various trails. Don't just stop off the highway.

We enjoyed the refuge, not as nice as the refuge in Ridgefield. But certainly a nice day trip. You can drive there, enjoy the wallk about and have a beer downtown with lunch before heading back to Vancouver or Portland metro area.

The biggest problem we had associated with visiting the refuge was the planning phase. The published maps aren't accurate. The road (Steamboat Slough Rd) along the river no longer goes through due to a washout. Also, it was impossible to find the Center Road trailhead...More

We stopped and read some of the signs. Looked for deer. There were none visible, even though there are supposed to be hundreds of them here. We did not take the "trail" which was actually a perfectly good road that had been blocked to vehicles....More

I liked the ponds and sloughs in the refuge because they attracted so many duck, geese, and other birds. It was fun to see the Columbian White Tailed deer and learn of the project to help that species repopulate. The park rangers were extremely helpful...More

We enjoyed a peaceful walk through the refuge. We would have preferred walking on a trail (it's a paved road), but the bird songs and pretty scenery were certainly worth the trip.

You can stop along the road and read an informational plaque or two. You can use your binoculars to search the fields for deer. But you probably won't see much wildlife at this refuge. We parked on the river side of the refuge and walked...More
