We spent the day exploring the Columbia River Gorge and made our way to the Goldendale Observatory based on other folks suggestions. We learned a lot of great information and our kids ages 6 and 7 stayed entertained for the most part. They loved being able to climb the large ladder and look through the large telescope. Halfway through, the... More

While on vacation, our family was driving through Goldendale and decided to spend a couple of days there to take in the Maryhill Museum and the planetarium show at the observatory since it was free. We have been to several planetarium shows around the country, and this one was without question, the best we have ever experienced. Troy was unbelievably... More

Like other reviewers we were in awe of the equal parts knowledge and charisma of the Observatory Director. The worst part of the presentation was regretting we didn't have the kids with us. There was so much information shared in an entertaining and memorable way. We will definitely have to go back when the large telescope and the larger building... More

We have been to the observatory three times--two afternoons and an evening. For our first two visits, we were the only visitors as the weather was crappy. Who wants to visit an observatory when the weather is cloudy? Do not let that hold you back. Troy Carpenter, Director, is absolutely amazing. His presentations were supposed to be one hour, but went... More

The view is incredible and this is a great place to visit. Go when you are in the area. This is good, low key family fun and cheap treat too. All age adventure

The Observatory was a must see stop on our journey and even though the main telescope isn't up and running at the moment, we still managed to see Saturn, a dying sun and the Andromeda Galaxy! Troy was the guide that night and he challenged our brains and blew our minds with science in a funny, friendly, accessible way. Great... More

Run by Washington State Parks, this observatory has one of the finest telescopes available for public use in the country. During the day the rangers (who are astronomers) will do a guided tour that includes seeing sun spots, and prominences (on a clear day). At night the Milky Way is brilliant and you will get a guided tour of planets,... More

The skies here are perfect for astronomy, and the town of Goldendale actually has light ordinances to keep it that way! If you enjoy seeing the Milky Way from horizon to horizon (not a candy bar, the real thing), and would love to get a peek through a really large telescope, plan a trip to this observatory - you will... Interesting presentation with discussions fielded from the group. Knowledgeable commentator (who was ill and had to leave). Observation building was down for some reason, we all got a chance to look through some smaller portable telescope outside instead. Not what we came for and not what we would expect. Wonder how long this has been out of order and how... More

Greetings, Cindy. The South Dome was locked up due to the ongoing construction project; we are in the midst of a large-scale capital upgrade and the primary telescope was removed in June 2016 for refurbishment. It will return by mid-September, or end of October at the latest. Please keep an eye on our website, which is always updated with the... More

We camp down by Maryhill State Park a couple times a year and have always planned on visiting the observatory but just never made it there. Seeing the clear sky while we were camping, we decided to try it this time around. My younger daughter was not interested in going so I took my older daughter for the nighttime show... More
