--History--

Tacoma Art Museum was founded by a group of volunteers in 1935 and has since grown to become a national model for regional, mid-sized museums. The museum is dedicated to exhibiting and collecting Northwest art, with the mission of connecting people through art. The museum's permanent collection includes the premier collection of Dale Chihuly's glass artwork on permanent public display.

Tacoma Art Museum opened at its current location on May 3, 2003, when it moved from a former bank building that was built in 1920. Nearly twice the size of its previous location, Tacoma Art Museum's $22-million Antoine Predock-designed structure provides the space to exhibit more of the permanent collection. In designing the building, Predock drew inspiration from the region's light, its relationship to the water, the neighborhood's industrial history and character, Mount Rainier, the Thea Foss Waterway, and the surrounding structures in what is now known as the Museum District.

Completed in November 2014, an addtional $15.5 million building project has added approximately 16,000 square feet, and houses the new Haub Family Collection of Western American Art. This collection establishes Tacoma Art Museum as the only major museum of Western American art of this caliber in the Northwest. It also enables the museum to fully explore the art history of the West while integrating its Western and Northwest collections. It's an exciting time to be a part of the Tacoma Art Museum family!

--Mission and Vision--

Tacoma Art Museum is a public-spirited institution with nationally recognized exhibitions and innovative educational programs. Named by USA Today as one of the "Top 10 Great Places to See Art in Smaller Cities," the museum has developed a reputation for presenting art in a thought-provoking yet accessible manner with a strong commitment to Northwest art through its acquisition and exhibition programs. Founded in 1935, the museum has strong roots in the community and anchors Tacoma's lively downtown university and museum district.

This is another find in Tacoma. I loved the art collection and the Chihuly glass exhibit. A number of tasteful benefactors have generously given to TAM and the quality of TAM's collections has clearly grown.

Terriffic exhibit of Portraiture art sponsored by the Smithsonian. Held over, don't miss it! Haug collection of western art is georgeous. Around 50 pieces of a 200-piece collection on display, we're told. Framing of the Haug collection is a priceless display all in itself. And, of course, the glass collection is over the top. The family whose 200 or so... More

The Tacoma Art Museum promises a lot on its Web site, but delivers too little, especially in this low winter season. We had the bad luck to catch the museum between the closing of the previous exhibition and before the opening of the next one. The result was that part of the halls were closed, and some of the sections... More

Permanent collection of Dale Chihuly Glass Art is amazing! The Haub Family Collection of Western American Art is very impressive. I especially like how frequently the temporary exhibits change and the quality of the artwork.

Been a member for years. At first that was partly to be a good civic supporter. Now it's because the museum has wonderful exhibits and is very professionally run and has fabulous exhibits.

Haven't been able to schedule a visit for months but finally had time modulated by the last day of a Black artists show and our first chance to see pieces from the Benaroya collection given to this museum. The current selection from the over 200 piece gift features local glass artist and it's stunning. Had lunch in their excellent restaurant... More

TAM is a treat!! We saw sculpture and painting of the American West, glass by Dale Chihuly, contemporary Afrocentric work plus more. We just had a couple of hours, but because the museum is small we were able to keep 'fresh eyes'. Only about a half hour south of Seattle, Tacoma is worth the trip!

Not intending to visit a museum this trip we decided to kill some time. I was surprised at the caliber of the facility and the art it has attracted. The selections in the hall were quite varied - Western Art to glass to sculpture to culture modern - all of which I was impressed by. I found the layout fascinating... More
