About
Fred Herz was camping in the Canaan Valley in 1985, while sitting by a camp fire, staring up at a mountain he thought that it would be a great place to ski. He convinced his entire family to buy into his idea and create Timberline Four Seasons Resort. in 1986 Timberline opened for business. Fred is a true visionary. Today we are proud to state that we have the longest trail south of Vermont, the highest average vertical in the SE, and the best glade skiing south of New England. Our ski school accommodates skiers of all ages, and we have a program for guest with disabilities to be able to get out and enjoy our slopes. Our most proud accomplishment, however, is in helping preserve the highlands ecosystem. The Cheat Mountain salamander, a threatened species that is unique to West Virginia, may have a shot at recovery, thanks to conservation efforts that are underway at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge.

Most challengjng hill in West Va. Took my son ans had a blast for 4 days. We were blessed with 16 inches over 2.5 days. Perfect North has really turned this hill around. Definitely where to go if you want to just ski and enjoy the runs

A surprisingly decent ski resort. The staff is friendly and helpful. The rates here are very affordable. It is a nicely designed resort, with the mountain runs well designed. It is a small resort, so there are not lots of runs versus a big New England or Western resort, but this is decent skiing for this region. Except for quad lift to the terrain park, ALL skiers and boarders ride the same one central lift up (high-speed, 6-person chairs) - but the line moves at a decent speed on weekdays (but does get rather crowded with a long line on weekends). Fortunately, and unexpectedly for a small resort, one of the run (Salamander) is a nice long, 2-mile cruiser - showing how well they carved their trails to the terrain. We enjoyed our three long-weekend visits this past season so much (it is under three hours drive from our home), that we purchased season passes for next season. This place has a lot of potential. One more high-capacity lift would be awesome.

I am a person who budgets and allocates ski time as part of my lifestyle. I live in NC, so I am willing to make the required tradeoffs. Also, I have earned my turns out west...Kirkwood, Jackson, slc, whistler, Arapahoe & summit Co.

I took my wife and daughter to timberline in Feb 21. I am buying a condo as a direct result of my experience. Good stuff is happening here, and the mountain has the the right bones to support experts and beginners.

I visited Timberline Mountain twice in March 2021. This was my first time visiting the resort and I went twice within a week because it was so fun. The lodge was very clean and the staff was very welcoming. The slopes are awesome! They were perfectly groomed from edge to edge both visits. They had plenty of slopes to accommodate all skill levels, the 2 mile Salamander green slope (easy) was quite fun to cruise and crave. Twister is a blue slope that is super fun that takes you through 2 tunnels and a extremely cool neighborhood. The high speed lift to the top is very impressive, it only takes about 4 minutes to the top. To enter the lift loading area they have RFID lift tickets which were very convenient. We ate lunch in the cafeteria area and enjoyed a huge burger, grilled chicken sandwich and some really good fries. This place is definitely worth the trip and if your close enough purchase a season pass.

Great place to ski. Not super big but decent terrain. Blacks are steep. One con is the lack of lifts end up causing long lines. The lodge is clean and seems updated. The kids had a great time.

Visited Timberline over 6 years ago multiple times, and since then their management worsened and the resort declined in quality as a result.

However, after being sold to Perfect North, the resort has had a complete makeover and is now perhaps one of the best resorts in the area. Some locals say that it has the best snowmaking they have seen in the area in a long time. The Lodge has been renovated and the two new lifts are user friendly and fast.

Social distancing precautions are enforced in the lift lines (staff will make occasional announcements over a speaker for everyone to pull up their masks, and will remind people as they walk around the lift lines if they see someone with their mask down). The lodge is a bit crowded around lunch time (noon to 1 PM) and has many people eating, so it would be better to get lunch on an off time either before or after it is crowded.

Especially when it snows, the scenery is fantastic throughout the mountain and most of the courses will be open. The courses from green to double black are all well maintained. The beginner slope is a bit too easy, but staff who provide lessons are experienced and helpful even if you did not order a lesson.

Definitely would recommend this ski resort for anyone who is interested (make sure to go down the Salamander green course, a 2 mile scenic course from the top of the mountain).

I grew up East Coast skiing and have been going to this mountain for on and off for 15 years as my family has a home in the area. The time is now to go! New Ownership has invested a lot of money on a high speed-6 person lift that take less than 5 minutes to get you to the top, and it makes all the difference in the world. And they have the highest tech snow making machines available. My family went for Christmas, 2020 and had great conditions. The new ownership is working on more and more upgrades, which should only make it nicer. All new rental ski and board equipment too! It is not West Coast skiing, but ranks right up there against other East Coast slopes. Enjoy!

This place has changed for the best! I last visited 5 years ago and it was not a good scene; poor staff, snow equipment, horrible food and restrooms. NOW
A. Two brand new lifts to whisk you up the mountain quickly.
B. New snow making equipment
C. The staff, from restaurant to lift operators were positive, friendly, and upbeat in our current COVID environment.
D. Our basic lunch of burgers, fries, and drinks were efficient and tasty.
E. Restaurant and restrooms were clean and fresh; you could tell plans were being made for expansion.
E. There was a really good buzz on the mountain today.
Families everywhere and all seemed to be having a good time. We certainly did.

Good news!
Timberline Four Seasons has been sold to
Perfect North.
They plan to restore the resort and open 2020-21 season. Canaan Valley will have three terrific ski options!
This season we plan to ski at Canaan Valley and White Grass.
