About
- Located in the Allegheny Mountains of Tucker County, Blackwater Falls State Park is named for the amber waters of Blackwater Falls, a 57-foot cascade tinted by the tannic acid of fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. The falls, along with a few of the park’s other features like Elakala Falls, Lindy Point and Pendleton Point Overlook, are some of the state’s most photographed spots. Visitors can enjoy the scenic views year-round by taking the steps to the falls or using viewing platforms. The park has 20 miles of hiking trails, the longest sledding magic carpet on the East Coast, a comfortable lodge and more.

My husband and I visited the falls for the first time in the spring more than 10 years ago. We took the trail right down to the falls. This fall we visited again but are now seniors. We were so happy to see that there was a gentle trail of about a quarter of a mile that led to an overlook of the falls. We saw the trail we had taken years ago in the distance at the foot of the falls. The trail we took now was a short paved path that began at the parking area across from the maintenance area. The overlook provided a good view of the falls. The falls drop about 63 feet and are divided by rocky ledges. The color of the water is caused by the acid from fallen red spruce and hemlock trees. Because we went in October there weren't many people and we about had the falls to ourselves. Fall colors were starting. Absolutely beautiful!

Beautiful State Park with many great trails. They have two different places to see the falls
one easy trail that you see it from a distance and a longer trail with more steps
that you are able to get up close to them. We camped for a few days and the camp ground was really nice. They kept the restrooms clean. Are camping site had many trees behind it which was great place to walk the dog. There were many deer that would visit the campsite. We saw the cabins and they really looked nice too and were separated in there own it area not close together.
In the winter they offer cross county skiing and down hill skiing plus a neat sled run.

Hoped to catch some autumn colors but were a little disappointed. The falls are pretty and worth seeing. Unless you are going to do some hiking, the visit should take less than an hour.

Very nice falls. Unfortunately our itinerary had us there the day before Labor Day and it was crowded. The park itself was well maintained and the boardwalks and stairs made it easy to get a great and close up view of the falls. We just had to drive a ways to go it.

The falls are so pretty and we loved the wooden boardwalk down to the falls so that we could get close to them. It is an easy walk and the grounds are well maintained. The falls were so interesting because of the color of the water as it cascades over the rocks. Definitely a great stop on our road trip.

The hikes I went on {Blackwater Falls and Elakala Falls) were really like 5 minute walks, so it's not an activity that has to last all day. The falls were beautiful!

The falls are gorgeous! I loved listening to the water, watching it change shape and form as it plummeted over the falls. The wooden stairs and landings are very well maintained. The dirt paths have the brush cleared back from the path allowing families to walk next to each other. Definitely an enjoyable visit!

I originally wanted a vacation cabin but they were booked. Once we got there and saw both, I am glad we had a classic cabin. The vacation cabins are right along a busier road and they are just clustered together. The classic cabins were tucked back into private spaces. The cabin was good for a small family on a weekend trip. It had everything we needed and served as a good location for exploring the park.
