We were running out of daylight on this visit, a beautiful stone (old) Church building and an interesting Cemetery alongside. The Church dates from 1796 and is built of local limestone & the Cemetery a year later. The graves vary from early settlers , trappers, slaves, merchants, ex-pastors, confederate & union troops. Lewisburg was Confederate but fought over and occupied... More

The Old Stone Church has been around since 1796 and has lots of history. We really enjoyed walking around the graveyard.

What a beauty! And so much history! Be sure to walk in the cemetery too. You can see history there too. There's a King James first edition Bible from 1612 behind glass in the church!!

Old Stone is the oldest church west of the Alleghenies in continuous use. If you like churches that eschew the ornate, be sure to visit. The sanctuary is a model of Presbyterian elegant plainness and simplicity. In that aspect, It reminds me a bit of the Shakers. Be sure to check out the attached cemetery.

Absolutely a good stop on a tour of Lewisburg. There is a lot of history just in the cemetery. The church is beautiful.

Old Stone Presbyterian Church is a beautifully crafted historic church. The interior was alive with natural light. Around the church are the white and slave cemeteries, which because of their age is a fun walk.

Really like reading the inscriptions on the headstones in the cemetery. The old church was closed when we visited, but the stone construction is unusual. It may be opened at special times only.

I went to see the historic side of the church, and God's people, but never expected such a warm welcome! The building dates back to the 1700's with thick walls and a balcony that once separated the boys from the girls. The exterior is fashioned from the local limestone which occupies the countryside. A breeze of history flows through the... More
