The Aldo Leopold Shack and Farm is a National Historic Landmark. The Aldo Leopold Foundation manages the site and permits self-guided and guided visits. Visitors check in at the Leopold Center, headquarters of the Aldo Leopold Foundation and an interpretive center with displays on Leopold's life and legacy. The Leopold Center has been rated as one of the greenest buildings in the world, with Platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the US Green Building Council. Solar panels. geothermal systems, and extensive use of local materials make the building itself an interesting attraction as well.

I attended two days of chainsaw training and got a lot of value out of the program. The foundation is very gracious to host such events. The facility is perfect for the combination of classroom work in the morning and then training in the woodlot in the afternoon. I hope to return for days 3 and 4 later this year.

Beautiful day and wonderful place for field trip. Attended as part of a conference. I want to bring my family back. Great to learn about the legacy of Leopold and that the work is continuing. It's worth the trek!

As we left Galena IL to head home, we took a little detour to the Aldo Leopold Center. It was an amazing "green" building. We loved listening to the tour and the wealth of information the gift shop attendant gave us. The grounds are beautiful and the buildings amazing. YOu will definitely want to sit through the video tours in... More

I gave this 5 stars for Sand County Almanac fans. Aldo Leopold was the premier conservationist of the 20th century, and that book is the BEST nature writing ever. If you are not a fan, it's worth the trip to the center to find out about Leopold, and that's free. If you want to visit the "shack," it costs a... More

This is a great attraction if you are tired of water slides and t-shirt shops. Very historic, on the beautiful Wisconsin River. Lots of good information from the staff. Something the kids can write about in the What Did I Do This Summer, when they get back to school this fall.

The Leopold Foundation is a lovely step off the beaten path to reconnect with nature. Not only is it a nature lover's paradise; it is also an educational keystone for understanding how we can conserve and protect nature as we develop. Learning about Leopold's Land Ethic is vital for anyone who is interested in developing or deepening their love of... More

After reading about Aldo Leopold's Shack and Farm in these reviews and on the website I knew we wanted a guided tour so we could go in the Shack. I was happy to get reservations for the one tour that is done on Sat afternoons. There were ten of us in the group and Kent was an excellent guide. His... More

It is hard to grasp the monumental importance of the Leopold family's "shack" near the Wisconsin River with a single visit, but there is no better place to start. Like Aldo Leopold's writing, each time I revisit it, I find something new. It is a source of inspiration. The shack itself very easily could have disappeared completely had Aldo Leopold... More
