Our hotel concierge told us to take Hwy 250 and than 270 to the Pololu Valley Lookout. Little did we know how beautiful the Kahala Mountain Road (Hwy 250) is. The drive was a bit scary for me - I had to close my eyes...More

We just drove through but did stop at the ancient Village state park along the route. Definitely worth the stop to see remnants of a 700 year old Village along the shore. Then up into the mountains. Looking down at the verdant pastures was so...More

Nothing special along the way except for those amazing views. Generally you have the road to yourself.

The views were good (but only one place prepared for stopping if you come from the Waimea side) and the drive was easy. You can go back by the coast. Landscape totally different than on the rest of the island.

Some scenerary which if you haven't experienced before is interesting for about 10 minutes. After that it became more like West Texas (repeating the same thing on the same road).

Mountain road, not very crowded, with plenty of places to stop and enjoy the view. A great get-away!

Best part is you can end up in charming artsy Hawi. Amazing views. Usually good weather. Great way to spend the day on the Big Island

This road goes from Hawi on the northern coast to Waimea in the north central part of the island. It slowly climbs to around 4000 feet and then reverses down toward Waimea. It passes through part of the Parker Ranch land. Take your time and...More

We drove to the north end of the island from Waikoloa and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful scenery, which included the drier leeward side of the island and then turned into the mountain valley. On this portion of the drive, the scenery changed dramatically, with lush...More
