The Smithsonian-affiliated Lyman Museum tells the story of Hawaii’s islands and people through its exhibits on Hawaii’s volcanic origins, flora and fauna found nowhere else in the world, Hawaiian culture, and other ethnic groups that have shaped the unique society of Hawaii today. Admire worldwide collections of sea shells and minerals. Learn about 19th century missionary life on a tour of the historic Lyman Mission House, the Island’s oldest wood frame building constructed in 1839.

One floor (now under reconstruction, but a film shows the objects with good commentyary) is devoted to Hawaiian culture and the other to Hawaiian geology. A tour of the old home next door is very interesting; Bruce, our guide, seems to know everything about the...More

I was surprised at the amount of history and varied things that they offered in this museum. They had an incredible rock collection, which was a surprise. The staff was very friendly and it was interesting hearing how they acquired their items.

A perfect place to visit IN Hilo on a rainy day. A lot of interesting things to learn about the Hawaiian history and the missionaries that came to Hawaii. A small fee. I was disappointed that the second level of the museum was closed.

Coming to this museum was honestly not our first choice, but given the torrential rain, it was one of few options. We ended up spending over two and a half hours here. This museum is great for a potted history of Hawaii- geologically, biologically and...More

The museum is very interesting but the highlight is the house. The tour guide made it all come to life. The history of Hawaii and this area is interesting.

Museum was interesting, nice collection of mineral specimens and seashells. Tour of house was good although docent was verrrry talkative. Wore me out with lots and lots of details.

The house tour here is very interesting giving insight into the lives of the missionaries who came here and changed the destiny of these islands. Not far from the main part of Hilo. There is a fee for the tour. We had a good guide.
