Wife and I spent a while exploring the caves on recent trip. Went to the left side first at the recommendation of other reviewers, also did the right tunnel as well. Definitely a place that you can spend many hours exploring. Just make sure you...More

This is a great spot for a cave experience. It is free and uncrowded. It looks just like every tropical cave you have seen in movies. It is deep and easy to explore with only a little scrambling. It is the complete opposite of the...More

We stopped here after we had time to kill and found it on Trip Advisor. What a wonderful find. I am an overweight, 53 year old lady with teenage boys. I got down the stairs no problem and hung out in the front of the...More

Nicholas fantini, 16 yr old , Italy. I heard about the caves once me and my mother stepped on the island, just a name, nothing in particular. But after visiting the Thurston caves and left completely unimpressed we decided to give a look at the...More

Enter prepared to go caving (i.e. spelunking). As everyone says: lights, real shoes, water. You don't need gloves but will appreciate them, as the lava is sharp. We initially wore long sleeves and pants, but changed before entering the second cave. If you go deeper...More

This cave is not the easiest place to access but if you can make it then it is a neat place to check out!

Quick stop on our way to Hilo. You're able to explore the cave as you wish. Bring headlamps. It truly is so dark that you don't know if your eyes are open or closed. We hiked a ways back and then turned off the lights....More

I do not think there are any busses that run there specifically. You might be able to find a city bus that passes close by or like others have said uber/lyft.

No Sulfur smell. Very humid. My husband has asthma and he did great in the tubes. He did admit that the further back he went, he really could feel the "thick" air, but he had no adverse effects.
