Although chasing fresh lava flows is extremely dangerous, Chris' years of experience and keen instincts combines for a thrilling adventure. Me my teenage boys sat on a cliff in silent awe, in the middle of the night watching lava waves crashing the shore then hiked across desolate older flows in search of break out flows of fresh lava. This was... More

My family has been going to the Big Island almost every year for the last 30 years. We have been to Volcano National Park multiple times (always enjoyable), but never in my life have we experienced something like our trip with Chris and Big Island Outfitters. It's truly a one-of-a-kind experience, and I recommend everyone does it at least once... More

You need to be there at 3am but it's worth it. Chris was on time at the rendez vous point. He lends you a walking stick and you can poke the lava with it. He's very knowledgeable about the volcanoes and the island. You get to walk on the lava field, see the lava in the dark, the sunrise and... More

Our timing was not good. Questioned several tour operators and all were (understandably) pessimistic on actually finding flowing lava. Chris was the only one suggesting it would be relatively easy. That should have been fair warning. We tromped around on 2-year old lava flows for several hours hunting the proverbial snipe. While a bit more than slightly deceptive, Chris was... More

The only reason I rated this a 4/5 was because of the guide. He was wacked. The trip lasted about 3am to 9am. It was expensive (really every place we looked was). Chris was very knowledgeable but every time he talked his back was towards us (since he was leading) and it was difficult to hear him. The views were... More

Definitely need to be up for the hike since you start at 3am, but it is definitely worth it. Don't think there is any other place to play with lava.

Our tour with Chris was one of our favorite memories from our trip to Hawaii. We knew that we wanted to see lava during our trip to the island, and selected this trip after reading mixed reviews about the helicopter tours - we were not disappointed! Although folks in the village mentioned that the volcano has been really active, i... More

Hello travelers! Listen, you can read my earlier review from last spring, and it all stands. I just wanted to share that my last experience was so good that I decided to repeat the adventure when I returned to the Big Island this year. It was waaaay worthy. First off, the magma is flowing heavily, and at the time of... More

I wasn't too sure what exactly to expect when we emailed Chris about booking a tour but it was nothing short of spectacular. When you pull up to the meeting spot to meet Chris the adrenaline starts going and you head out on an unforgettable adventure. There sin't anywhere else in the world where you can hike up to active... More

You must do this hike if you're visiting the big island. This was better than a helicopter tour because you get up close and personal with the flowing lava. Chris is a great guide, very informative. Must have good shoes and be able to hike a few miles.
