Nice small beach. Clean. I've heard snorkelling here is pretty good. On a clear day you get great views of Mauna Kea. Black sand is pretty cool.

This beach is really great with some nice spots to sit on the beach. It is a really great snorkeling beach with a bunch of different species of butterflyfish and parrotfish. You can even see many humuhumunukunukuapuaa here, they are a common site. Just watch...More

Lots of options - there are lagoons nearby as well as a small black sand beach. You can snorkel or just look in the tidepools for tropical fish. Snorkeling is popular here as well. Early in the morning we would go to see the large...More

Loved visiting the area. Did not snorkel, but it looked like a great place to do so. Took many photos of the rocks and sea. Even saw a turtle and fish in one of the many tide pools. Great place to picnic and enjoy the...More

Decent snorkeling when the wind and waves are both down. Interesting historical site where a haole helped a local family survive a disease that swept through. Parking is somewhat limited but free.

If you want to see a black sand beach, this is the closest place near Hilo. The beach is small, to be sure, but it is black. And you can swim safely off this beach.

I agree with the first two answers above. You don't need to worry about a tour bus, the local bus does run there, but not on Sundays. Just look up the bus schedule online. Or when you get to Hilo you can call the bus company... More
