There are thirteen telescopes on the top of Mauna Kea, but none are more spectacular than the Subaru Telescope, especially when viewed with the setting sun. At trip to the summit is well worth it (weather permitting), and I recommend taking one of the many tours available which allows you to concentrate on viewing the landscape while you are taken... It's like being on mars. Just so cool. Cold, crisp and clear air up at the top of the world! Be prepared for altitude effects. Dizziness or nausea from lack of oxygen in the air.

Every month the mountain hosts a tour of local people and I got to go. There was that breathless quality of being on almost star trek adventure, visiting this telescope. Awe inspiring. Also, on top of the world.

It was a short but very interesting tour and definitely something to add to the list if you got to the very top of Mauna Kea. 4 wheel recommended.

You can't go inside the telescopes but the views are incredible. Go at sunset to get unreal photos. It is cold, very cold.

Most likely if you wait until you get to Hawaii to try to book the Subaru Telescope Tour, you won't get in, it usually takes a week or longer to get tickets. You also need to plan on renting a 4 wheel drive and getting up to the top of Mauna Kea early, but it will be worth it. The... More

I booked a guided, English language tour, around 4 weeks prior to our trip to Big Island. Since this is the only telescope you can actually tour and snap pictures everywhere inside, it is a must-see if you can fit it into your travel plans - the English tours only operate once a week and are free. The drive up... More

To reach the summit of Maunakea, where the telescopes are located, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is a must. The road to the top is paved as far as the observatory, but dirt and rough from there. Not for the faint of heart! But if you are brave, the views on the way up cannot be described! The summit is at... More

We went back to Hawaii to celebrate our 34th anniversary. We made reservations several weeks in advance for an English language tour. I am an amateur astronomer and really enjoyed the tour. We did take some Diamox several days before and made sure to hydrate as the last time we summited Marna Kea we were in our late 20's and... More
