A view of Old Hawaii and Great Art

So close to Kona but a world away, walk through the little town of Holualoa and visit the art galleries - spot and have lunch at Holuakoa Cafe.

First the route itself is just a lovely drive with lush surroundings. There are numerous original buildings with historical background. Gives you insight into Hawaiian and Japanese development of this gallery. Some good restaurants and galleries. Won't take a whole day but we spent a very enjoyable morning there. I hope this area can be preserved rather than seeing demolition... More

Out of busy town. Great coffee (especially the bold). Friendly & knowledgeable guide. Free banana from their tree.

I picked up this historic route at Highway 180 having driven from Hilo as I was staying near Holualoa (later it merges into Highway 11 - the Beltway). It is a delightful drive, but the road does have a lot of bends and the speed limit is 30mph in many places. The foliage and views along the roadway are lovely... More

If you miss this drive you will not have a sense of the real big island before all the tourist development. This is old Hawaii and I hope it can be preserved.

We took this route to get to another destination. The views were nice. An occasional view of the ocean. Nice foliage. The town area was nothing to write home about. I can see how at one time it may have attracted visitors but your not missing anything if you just slow down while driving through. I do highly recommend the... More

This historic road (also known as Highway 180) is a delight to drive. It is only a few miles, the best part being between the old Hawaiiana town of Holualoa (famous for its art local art galleries, coffee farms and coffee roasters) until it merges into Highway 11 (also known as the Beltway) near Captain Cook. The foliage along the... More
