Spencer Beach feels unlike the others on the Big Island. There's a good mix of visitors and locals, and it just feels less 'showy' than the other more popular beaches. Perhaps the biggest benefit is the smooth water. In 5 or 6 visits, there has...More

Stopped here after getting turned away from Mauna Kea Resort. This beach and park area is nice and fairly clean. Unfortunately the winter waves had churned up the water and made visibility very poor. Just keep an eye of the weather before you go. People...More

We like to go here for afternoon picnics at sunset. Lifeguard on duty. Sandy beach easy to enter for all ages. When waves are high every place else Spencer beach is calm. Lots of picnic tables. Also public camping, book online. Showers, bathrooms and Hapuna...More

We wandered down for the sunset and returned the next day to take a look at the history and grand temple (with appropriately gruesome accompanying tales) of Kamehameha the Great. The trails around the park give ocean and lagoon vistas to delight a photographer.

Perfect beach for relaxing, not for surfing. Would be great for little kids. We stopped after a long hike and rested and relaxed in the sun. Such a great beach. I would definitely recommend it!

After visiting the historical site we came down t this area by coincidence. They have a huge Tamarind tree in the middle of the beach and also other chances to have some shadow. The water was perfect. It was mixing warm water with colder water...More

Don't know for sure. If the rocks are light in weight and shiny-black, they're lava. Heavy black rocks may not be or may be lava based.
