Since 1999, Doug and Sandy McMaster have been presenting authentic, award winning traditional Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukulele concerts. Fridays 4pm and Sundays 3pm at the Hanalei Community Center. Concerts are also now offered in Princeville at the Princeville Community Center (4334 Emmalani Rd. 6pm Saturdays) and at All Saints' Church (Kapaa 6pm Wednesdays). Their 2000th concert will be held the first week of April 2017. They've been voted Best Live Show by Hawaii Magazine Readers several times. They're a key attraction and an excellent way for visitors to experience the beautiful family music tradition of Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukulele while learning its history, cultural significance, and inspirations behind the songs. Their mission is to ho'omau (continue the tradition) as directed by Raymond and Elodia Kane (Oahu) and Keli'i Mawae (Molokai). The soothing sounds of traditional slack key music relax the audience into 'Hawaii time' bringing peace and Aloha to heart and soul. Concerts are one of the most affordable things to do on Kauai and appeal to both the individual visitor as well as to groups or families. The venues are family friendly and accessible.

I did not know what slack key guitar was so wasn’t expecting to enjoy it very much. The name slack key sounds harsh and unappealing and weird. What a Surprise...slack key sounds better than regular guitar. Because the Hawaiian people long ago didn’t have other...More

Doug and Sandy provided 2 beautifully calm quiet hours of informative relaxation, complete with historic presentation of a variety of songs on guitar and ukulele. It was just what we needed at the end of our nice Kauai visit. We purchased CDs to remember them...More

I think tourists will love this. There is storytelling in between musical pieces. In fairness, there’s probably more storytelling and anecdotes than music. This isn’t a concert per se. it’s more a personal history session interspersed with traditional Hawaiian slack key music. I liked it...More

Mahalo nui loa for your feedback and suggestions... very much appreciated. In presenting the historical and cultural context of Hawaiian slack key and particularly a family music tradition, we incorporate storytelling as in most folk traditions. There are typically 13-15 musical pieces performed. Kupuna (elders)...More

We had been able to hear some free music over on the big island, but wanted to hear the McMasters because of their deep understanding of old style slack key: it's history, and they way music was played as a Hawaiian family tradition. This is...More

One of those things we have always wanted to do. Glad we finally did. Very entertaining and educational. There was a lot of history shared. The music was exceptional. Very happy.
