More
NTBG’s McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden are located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

Love the tour. If you want to go make sure you call ahead. The tours sell out and its the only way to get into the Gardens.

We paid $30 per person to take a self-guided tour of McBryde Gardens. Our shuttle bus driver Juan was very entertaining - the best part of the tour, actually. The shuttle bus drops you off at the Canoe Plants exhibit, which is really the only...More

I went to big gardens. The Allerton garden tour was great! The water features were not working but we were able to go to the Allerton estate. This is about a two hour walking tour. Our guide Sam, a native, was very nice and knowledgeable....More

We had such a great tour of the garden. The little lunch they served was a nice little addition in a nice little area with picnic tables. Sam told us so much information about the plants and their fruits. Really nice place to visit. This...More

We did the self guided tour of the McBryde garden. It was $30/person. The tour starts with a shuttle bus down to the far end of the garden. There are exhibits on 'Canoe plants' and native plants. There were a large number of non-native orchids...More

We are so glad we did this. The guide was so knowledgable and the place is so large that a guided tour is highly preferable to meandering around this huge facility on your own.

We took the Allerton Gardens tour. Our guide was great at explaining the design and about the plants. ( As a Horticulture major and a farmer, we love guides that are knowable about plants.)

The gardens are just west of Poipu. The location was one of many in Kauai that was used in the filming of Jurassic Park. I recommend the guided tour...interesting and informative. If you are into tropical gardens this is a must.

I believe the McBryde Gardens tour is more about the plants and a shorter tour. The midday Allerton Gardens tour takes well over two hours. Besides hearing about the plants you hear a lot of wonderful stories about the site... More
