we enjoyed walking the extensive grounds of Kahanu Garden...long stretches of lawn with varieties of trees and plants important to the Hawaiian culture. The heiau is massive, probably the largest in the Islands, covering 3 acres and about 4 stories high--we could only gaze up...More

We went here since we wanted to see a bit more of the original Maui. The gardens are quite big although the plant exhibits were not all there since I am guessing we were visiting out of season. The sacred ruins were very interesting but...More

Always great to visit. The new Visitor's Center is a wonderful addition. Pi'ilanihale Heiau is impressive. Needs more signage explaining everything. Staff is very helpful. Be sure to check out the beautiful bathroom facilities which were built with the help of local students - as...More

We stopped at the Kahanu Garden on our trip back from Hana. It was as soon as they opened in the morning and we had the entire place to ourselves. We enjoyed following along to see the different types of plants and admiring the large...More

This was by far our favorite stop while doing the Road to Hana. Peaceful, calm, and really interesting stuff about Hawaiian culture.

Interesting garden with nice walking tour booklet ($10/person). Two miles down partly gravel road, but nice to leave the Hana-bound crowds behind. Largest heiau on island; used to be a royal site. Lovely sea views. Watch out for those falling coconuts!
