A confident and cautious driver will have no problem on this windy yet beautiful drive. Great spots to stop and be amazed by the scenery, the Nakalele Blowhole is way cool and the drive isn't as bad as some make it out to be. Yes there are tight curves, blind spots and many stretches of one lane road but that makes it all the more adventurous. Stay away if you are a nervous nelly driver or from the prairies!

If you love incredible views, this is definitely a place to visit however be warned, sections of this road are single lane wide, no guard rails and overhang the side of cliffs. Definitely gets the adrenaline pumping. There is two way traffic on these single lane roads so if someone comes towards you, you really have nowhere to go. If you are an average driver, don't take this route. If you are a thrill seeker who knows how to drive, go for it but follow the speed limit (down to 5mph in areas) and take it easy. We've done the Road to Hana which is a dream in comparison to this road. This was the longest and sketchiest road I have ever driven. I'm torn about rating this road though as there have been numerous deaths on this road however we made is safely and the views were incredible.

Although a shorter drive than the more famous Road to Hana, it has some similar beauty. The blow hole is a can't miss, and the vistas make it worth the trip.

For any good driver with a regular car or SUV this is an interesting trip, with good views and access to nice mountain hikes. The attentive driver should be careful at every bend in the road and in the section with one-way traffic the uphill driving vehicle has priority. We hiked the ridge trail which allowed beautiful views to the north, east and south. The lush tree growth is impressive and the wild guava's along the trail were delicious.

This is one of the two sections of the island where the rental car companies ask that you do not drive on, the other being Hana. This is a beautiful drive, though, it's understandable why people are cautioned, long stretches of one lane highway skirt sea cliffs that drop abruptly, hundreds of feet, frequently there is no guard rail. At sections where you encounter oncoming traffic, someone needs to reverse and yield for the other vehicle, at certain points this was more sketchy than others.

We've driven this road to visit the Nakalele blowhole around mile marker 38 and the extremely sketchy chutes and ladders hike, which I don't recommend to anyone isn't in outstanding physical condition. Slipping on this hike could definitely be fatal.

Along this drive are some amazing scenic photo opportunities, the blowhole, the Kahakuloa area, a great art gallery and the ubiquitous Maui Banana bread. While this drive is totally doable, if you are uncomfortable on unpaved, single lane highway, frequently with blind turns and no guard rail, well, it would be good to consider doing either a guided tour or visiting elsewhere. The road all the way up to about mile marker 38 is clear though.

Was such a pretty drive, it was a bit weird as we are used to driving on the other side of the road, beautiful views of the mountains and open land, awesome feeling of being free.

We enjoyed this section of road more than the road to Hana. The views are excellent and there are fewer cars. The condition of the roads are a little less in places, but still quite safe.

This road is less traveled than the well-known Hana Highway, but what it lacks in notoriety, it more than makes up for it views and hikes. The conventional wisdom is to traverse this in a clockwise direction from the Lahina side. We went counter-clockwise starting at the intersection of Waiehu Beach Road and Kahekili Highway in Wailuku. It is a pleasant drive, however plan on it taking a bit of time. If you are leary of driving on narrow 1 lane roads, with turnouts, have someone else drive. At about the 7 mile marker the road gets very narrow for about 8 or 9 miles. This is the section where you need to drive the posted 5 or 10 MPH speedlimit. About halfway through this narrow section is the community of Kahakuloa, there are several food stands here. We stopped at Ululani's on the west side of Kahakuloa and had a fantastic coconut flavored shave ice, and excellent banana bread (cant miss it...only pink building in town). There are local artisans selling their wares, nice trails to hike, breathtaking scenery and the friendliest people you will meet, on this drive.

Tired of the beaches? How about a drive around the backside of Haleakala? Take highway 37 around the island to Hana. I know all the rental car agreements say there are 5 miles of dirt road.. We drove this road in late Sep 2016 and the 5 miles were uneven chunks of pavement. We drove slow and encountered no problems. Be aware there are sections of one lane road and there were times we had to inch around an on coming car. This can be exciting if there is very little shoulder and a drop off to the ocean on your side of the road. Be sure to stop off at the 7 Pools National Park before you arrive in Hana. As for the road from Hana to Paia -- this is a piece of cake compared to the road you just drove.

Absolutely one of the most amazing drives I've experienced. Good road conditions and little shopping surprise along the way.
Local cuisine stands seem to pop up along the route. Don't forget your camera!
