Overview
More
The waters around the main Hawaiian Islands of Kauai, Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Kaho'olawe constitute one of the world's most important North Pacific humpback whale habitats and the only place in the U.S. where humpbacks reproduce. Scientists estimate that two-thirds of the entire North Pacific humpback whale population (approximately 10,000 whales) migrate to Hawaiian waters to breed, calve and nurse their young. The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary protects these humpback whales, as well as coral reefs, sea turtles, and other marine life living within the sanctuary.

We went to the whale talk at the sanctuary twice this trip and, although the slides are the same, different volunteers offer different facts. Anyone interested in the whales should try to get to a talk, Tues and Thurs. 11 a.m. in the large building....More

This place has some really interesting artifacts. I suspect it is WAY underfunded which is a shame. It was relatively hidden, but had an expansive free parking lot AND the beachfront is part of the King's fishing trap. Very historic but not being maintained. Inside...More

Don't bother wasting your time. We were under whelmed and thought it was a glorified science fair. Very little information and a lot of volunteers.
