- JJJC_Family808 contributionsIt’s like impressionismWhat I mean is that it looks really great from a distance. When you get closer, you see it’s a cheap knock-off of the real thing in Japan. Inside, there is a big statue of Buddha. There’s a little space around the temple to walk around, see some koi, snap some pictures, go to the bathroom, buy some stuff from the gift shop and away you go. Why do I give it 4 stars or ovals or whatever? It’s still kind of neat and you get some nice pictures. And it’s something to do, other than a beach or a lookout. Sometimes a little variety helps. An interesting aspect of this site is where it is located and why it exists, at least my opinion of why it exists. First where: in a commercial area called Valley of the Temples. What’s the commercial aspect? It’s basically a series of cemeteries with plots for sale. Why a series of cemeteries? The developer sold off plots to build various churches and temples for different religions and I assume their congregants are buried there. The Byodo temple is basically, as far as I see it, a way to bring people to come to the Valley to see how beautiful it is and hopefully they’ll be dying to get in. Heck, when you get to the temple there’s signs and a table set up with one or two people hawking cemetery plots. Besides they charge a fee to get in to the site and it appears by the ample crowds they probably generate a hefty revenue stream from that alone, asides from gift shop proceeds, soda machines and snacks, too, I believe. And they sell ice cream bars in the shape of Buddha. Just joking. That’s capitalism. Whatever works.Visited November 2022Written 13 December 2022
- GEORGETTA S5 contributionsA penny for your plots?Pretty and peaceful place. Nothing spectacular. In a way, it did seem like what another reviewer had mentioned, just a way of selling burial plots. Ringing the bell was a cultural experience. Don't miss the stunning mountains behind the temple. Looks better from a distance than close up.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 January 2023
- Casual Traveler 750 contributionsInteresting stopIt's a gorgeous and peaceful spot but there is not much to do here except maybe meditate. Would be nice if the gardens were more extensive or something. The area surrounding the temple is all cemetery and there are salespeople at the temple which felt kind of strange. Would be good as part of a multi-stop tour, but not as great on its own.Visited January 2023Written 29 January 2023
- May_EXLWinnipeg, Canada560 contributionsTranquility NowAmple parking but could get congested when tour buses are in. $5 entrance fee to the temple. The temple is a replica of a temple in Japan’s Kyoto prefecture. The Byodo-In Temple is situated inside The Valley of the Temples property which is a huge cemetery. There was a sales rep promoting and selling cemetery plots. After the bridge there is a huge bell (bonshō) that people ring. You remove your shoes before getting inside the temple where the Buddha is for picture taking. The upper part of the temple was closed. Outside the temple is a gift shop and bathrooms. Koi pond was a nice touch. The garden area is small. I was expecting to be wowed and a bigger place to explore. Imo it is okay to visit for photography.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 February 2023
- Julia B3 contributionsTemple of equalityThe only reason I didn't rate it a 5 was because it was a bit crowded, we had difficulty finding a parking spot, and it was raining. This temple and the surroundings were beautiful. I did not go to the gift shop. You remove your shoes to visit the temple. And please remember to be respectful. It doesn't take long to visit. My sister and I took longer because there was a cat colony living on the grounds throughout the area. They were beautiful, and we couldn't resist stopping at the nearby grocery store to give them a bit of food. We also saw some mongoose. The backdrop of the mountains and the clouds were surreal.Visited January 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 25 February 2023

We really enjoyed the temple. Buy tickets online and go early to avoid the crowds. Feed to fish and check out the little gift shop. The rope to the bell is nasty! Bring hand sanitizer.

Absolutely beautiful temple and grounds. This is such a peaceful place and well worth the visit for the historic aspects, and the beautiful scenery and plants. The koi pond is amazing. Parking is tight so I recommend not going on a weekend.

Beautiful tranquil and peaceful place to walk through. Excellent place to stop by and see unique Asian architecture. It is located at the top of a hill around a cemetery worth a stop takes only 30 min to an hour to check out. They even have a big gong you can ring for luck.

A beautiful Buddhist temple in even more beautiful surroundings. It was built in 1968 but is a replica of a 900 year old Japanese temple. Easy to spend as much or as little time as you want here. You need to buy tickets but the tickets are very inexpensive (they'll get you at the gift shop). It is not an actual functioning temple with an active monastic community but actively welcomes worship and meditation from any denomination. It can also be used for weddings and other events. I'm an architect with an affinity for eastern vernacular architecture, so it was a special treat for me. Kids will enjoy feeding the Koi (of course fish food is available for small fee).

It's a quick stop, so why not. Ring the Gong, walk around the area, take off your shoes to enter the temple and experience inner peace for an hour during your trip to Oahu.

Absolutely peaceful and beautiful! My husband feed the birds and they would sit on his hand and take the food! We walked around the grounds for about a half hour because it was just breathtaking views with the calm and quiet since we got there the moment they opened. The temple was absolutely beautiful. Highly Recommend!

Yes, an admission fee is charged to enter the temple grounds. There is no mention of a military discount on their website but the general admission is only $5 ($4 for seniors and $2 for children ages 2-12).

There is an entrance fee to get up to the temple, but not for the cemetery grounds. I took photos everywhere without photograph permission.

We are staying in Aulani this summer and planned on visiting Kualoa Ranch and the Temple in the same day. I believe the temple is on the way to Aulani from the Ranch? Where is a nice place to stop for lunch AFTER the ranch but before the Temple? Thanks!
Marcus L

You could eat at the Ranch, but I'd say travel down the road a half mile from the temple and go to Mike's Huli Chicken. It's probably some of the best food on the eastern side of the island.

hi, I don't recollect a sign regarding pets but it is not a public place. It is privately owned and operated. This is a solemn, religious area, so I would presume no.

Is there a better time of day to go and avoid large(r) crowds?
AyaHawaii

I think around 10:00 would be best time to go there. Visiting there from Waikiki area must need to use high way, such as H1. In my experience, until 9:00am has heavy traffic jam, so leaving around 9:30 to go to the place will be best time for you. After that you may enjoy Windward mall which locates 10 minutes from Byodoin.

Does this Temple have rules regarding visitors with tattoos? I know that some traditional Japanese temples do not allow guests with tattoos and would hate to be turned away from visiting.

No, I saw no such rules and I myself have many tattoos.
