I continue to be amazed at this place. A big tip: buy tickets before you set sail for San Francisco. Many tickets sell out quite quickly and weeks in advance. You wouldn't want to miss your preferred time:) We went on the first boat - 8:45 AM. It was cold!!!!! But the journey to the big rock was calm -... More

Went on the night tour which gives a different view of the island from the boat and offers a few extras like specific talks on different aspects of the history. We had a great time even though it was a beautiful day or was still cold out on the rock!! Wrap up warm whatever the weather in the city.

Fun trip to the Rock. About 3 hrs. Great self guided audio tour of the cell house. Park rangers were very pleasant and knowledgeable. Recommend going on one of the morning tours.

The tour was fascinating and informative! We very much enjoyed the tour. It was a bit chilly in December.

I definitely recommend visiting Alcatraz Island when in the San Francisco Bay area. I'm so glad I took the tour. It's about a 20 minute ferry ride out to the island, and so worth it. During the ride you can see San Francisco skyline and all the cool surrounding places and it's very fun to see. Before you know it,... More

I live in the area and always take out-of-town visitors to tour Alcatraz. There is a short ferry ride (with great views) over to the island. When you get off the ferry it's a short walk up hill to the buildings. The view from the island to San Francisco is spectacular -- lots of photo opportunities. The included audio tour... More

There is something about old jails that is so intriguing. So with the history of Alcatraz you cant help but love the tour. Used to be easy and cheap, now you need to plan at least a few weeks in advance to get tickets. Seriously, if you know your going, get the tickets now!

It's hard to imagine being locked up at Alcatraz. The conditions for the prisoners at the time were deplorable. It was a time when rehabilitation was nonexistent and punishment for a crime was indeed punishment. It was very interesting to see the cells, the dining area, the community showers and get stories from the guards and the prisoners about life... More

Get your tickets early!! We saw lots of people turned away when they showed up wanting tickets same day. Reservations are a MUST. Exploring Alcatraz is fun, but the "behind the scenes" tour would really be the way to go if you can swing it. There are sections only open to special tours, and they'd be worth seeing. We came...
