We walked to the top of the hill from the North Beach area, which was great fun. Lots of wonderful little paths through the beautiful residential districts. Once you get there, the views are amazing. 360 degrees across the city. We visited at sunset which was a lovely time to be there, not too busy and we got to see... More

The Coit Tower is one of the best 360* views of San Fransisco available. It is located on Telegraph Hill very near the center of the city. You can walk or drive up to the tower and there is also a bus. However there is only a minimal amount of parking. There is a small, manned elevator that takes people,... More

OK, so this is a little off topic but worth commenting. The view from the top of Coit Tower has the best view in SF and is so worth the visit. Great job making it a must see destination in SF. But, if you want the full SF/Coit Tower experience, walk there from the Embarcadero. Starting at sea level (just... More

Not only is the view from the tower and the park, the best in the City, getting there through Telegraph Hill and North Beach is a fun, lovely, and cultural experience. Also, the WPA-period murals in the lobby are a must-see (Diego Rivera reminiscent)...

The tower is a must for anyone who loves amazing views. Once you get to the tower the views if the Bay, Alcatraz, and the city are nice but if pay $8 for an adult you can go to the top of the tower and have a 360. I highly recommend going to the top of the tower. The only... More

The tower is at the pinnacle of Telegraph Hill. You can only access the top via elevator, but it's an easy couple minute ride up to some of the best views you can get anywhere in the city! Well worth it, but only go on a sunny day or evening.

Worth the trip up the hill! Murals of early San Francisco life are fantastic inside the building. Excellent views of the city and bay from all sides. Bus stop out front too.

We saw the tower from the ferry and I was astounded . This will be a must visit next time in San Francisco. I think the topography is difficult for the first time visitor.

Well worth a trip up the hill, i.e. the other side of famous crooked Lombard street. Best to o during the week early afternoon; you may be able to drive up and get a short-term parking space. Make sure you arrive before 4:30pm - closes after that for a 5:00pm complete close

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
