Not much going on here. Just a stop on ones way to Coit Tower maybe or the cathedral. Located in little Italy of course.

We happened to walk by the park on our way to Telegraph Hill. There was a group of (presumably) Chinese ladies practicing an exercise/dance with large fans which they snapped open and closed with precision. Cool!

A soul singer, right after the gate, covering Sam Cooke's songbook, at least 60, still talented. A jazz orchestra, at the other side of the fountain. Mid July, an ordinary Tuesday afternoon, people hanging around, listening, or reading a book.

While visiting the Washington Square locale be sure to check out Saints Peter and Paul Church on Filbert across from the park. It’s a lovely piece of architecture, very enjoyable even if you don’t go inside.

I discovered Washington Square Park on my way to Pier 39 via Bus #8 and I recommend this place to every reader visiting SF as this will get you away from the crazy atmosphere from Market street or Union Square. The park is nice and next to the park is a beautiful church: St Peter & Paul Church. There are... More

Washington Square is a perfect park for people watching. Right in the middle of North Beach, the Italian neighborhood, and right across from beautiful Peter & Paul Church on one side and the amazing Tony's Pizzeria on the other, and practically in the shadow of the impressive Coit Tower, relax in this park for a while, as you watch the... My wife and I recently visited San Francisco. While exploring the North Beach area we came upon Washington Square. There is a nice park here, with many small shops and businesses. It is a breath of fresh air for San Francisco

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
