Neighbourhood: Nob Hill
Swanky and stylish, Nob Hill sits in the heart of the city and is home to amazing architecture and views. The hike to the top can be a challenging workout for those who forego a cable car ride, but they will be rewarded with some of the city’s most beautiful architecture adorning its peak. Originally populated with mansions after the Gold Rush, most if not all were devastated in the 1906 earthquake and fire that followed. Luckily all is not lost; storied hotels and Grace Cathedral surround Huntington Park. Having a drink or dinner while taking in the sunset and views at the "top of the Mark" is tough to beat.

I visited the Nob Hill area of San Francisco, In between Grace Cathedral and the Fairmont Hotel is the Pacific Union Club. It is a historic mansion It serves as a social Club and was founded in 1889.

I had no idea how exclusive this place was until I got there, invited by a friend to lunch. We did have to go into a separate room to which guests can bring ladies but it was worth a visit all the same. The food was lovely too!

Once the private mansion of an Irish immigrant, who made his fortune in a silver mine, now it is the base for a secretive society known as The Pacific Club. Worth a look on the way past, but we would not have known about the history if we had not taken the free walking tour “San Fransisco In A Day”

No cell phones, no briefcases, no photos, no publicity, no business, no shorts, no jeans, no tipping, no indecorous behavior of any kind. Purely a social club for a very specific tiny slice of society in which dignity, elegance, and the highest form of etiquette is expected as a baseline. The building is gorgeous inside and out, but.. no pictures allowed. Women are allowed as guests of members in certain areas as long as quite specific guidelines for dress and all boundaries are acknowledged and respected. No female members. It is a fascinating experience and the dining is impeccable. Hard to imagine it will exist past the next generation as it is, eventually the no-women policy will have to go, but as a time-travel experience, if you are ever invited by a member, stand up straight, dress up, be on your best behavior and go!

If you want to be treated regally by waitstaff in tails, you have come to the right place. If you wish to join, you are in the wrong place! The waitlist is 20 years... if you have the pedigree and endless funds... but the food and service is unparalleled. The motto ''no women, no Democrats and no media'' may scare some folks off... and those folks should stay home. But if you wish to travel to a different world without boarding a plane, with that a member invites you!!

I have traveled the world and Pacific Union Club tops everything. Impeccable service.

My grandfather has taken me to the PU club a few times and every time I'm beyond impressed. The building in itself is absolutely stunning- a true piece of history. We were brought to our table in a quiet room and were waited on. The waitors are truly one of a kind. Dressed professionally and acted professionally as well, they truly care about their guests. 5 star food, it was delicious.

If you're looking for an exclusive, top of the line place Pacific Union Club is a must. It is very hard to get in there, but if you do, this place is the best club I've been to in the world.

A++++

One of the great private clubs of the world. Rooms are very spacious- king beds and sitting area- and very comfortable. Quiet, discrete and elegant, but obviously part of it's charm is that it is very old-fashioned, in the nicest possible way.
Car park in the very centre of Nob Hill is extraordinary and incredibly convenient.
Food is of course superlative. Don't have a clue how much it cost.

This is a simply stunning building. Tall marble columns, fine timbers and polished brass. Moulded ceilings that wouldn't look out of place in Chatsworth House.

The friendliest and most helpful staff, with nothing too much trouble.

For all the old-world style, it also has excellent wifi!
