This is a way to get across town, north to south. But note that construction to improve bus transit has torn up the avenue for a long time and construction will continue for some time in the future. So it will be a bit slow going and maybe you should find an alternative route.

This is a major wide avenue taking one across town, north to south. It was the break where the fire after the 1906 earthquake was contained. Hard to navigate now with so much construction around. Some grand architecture along the way.

This is the north-south corridor after you get off the freeway that takes you all the way to the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park by the waterfront. Along the way one can see the San Francisco City Hall, the Opera House and the Davis Symphony Hall but most of the time you will be looking at the bumper of the car in front of you.

Over our marvellous time in the city I think we would have walked most of this central avenue. It was great to see the terrific variety of architecture and styles.

Even though it is regarded as the eastern boundary of Pacific Heights, we wondered why the building forms are such a contrast with those further west. We later learnt that following the 1906 quake and fires many of the mansions lining the then avenue were dynamited by the authorities to form a firewall to stop fire engulfing the entire city. An undertaking largely successful.

At the southern segment the majestic City Hall with its fine dome is tremendous. Opposite it is the superb opera house and nearby the gorgeous Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall.

It is well known for its car dealerships, both present and past. A glorious one from the latter is the Don Lee Building that started life as a Cadillac dealership. Now it hosts the AMC.

Speaking of cars, the Academy of Art University Automobile Museum has a handsome collection of classic, vintage and veteran automobiles from the US and Europe on exhibition.

A number of fine churches are to be seen. Outstanding is the beautiful St. Brigid Catholic Church, now closed as a place of worship, but finding a new purpose under the aegis of the Academy of Art University.

Known mostly as the wide avenue that takes you North to South by car, cab or bus. Lots of construction right now creating congestion, but that will go away eventually. Some very grand big apartment buildings along the way, and some junk. Not a grand boulevard now, but maybe someday.

Starbucks Van Ness at CPMC is an average place. The items available are restricted, the service is not as friendly as one expects at Starbucks and closes early on weekends.

This major boulevard is performing underground construction that stretches from Mission St. all the way to Fisherman's wharf so it is best to avoid it for now until construction is completed in hopefully 2 years. Aside from lanes being blocked, there is also no left turn at all the intersections in both directions. So for the time being, use an alternate route instead of using Van Ness Ave...
