A favourite haunt of the beat generation and poets including the writer Jack Kerouac, across from the famous City Lights bookstore, this delightful bar exudes both history and charm. A gaslit candle chandelier hangs above the bar which fronts a large mirror, coloured glass lightshades...More

We were excited to come to a cute bar and have a couple of drinks with girlfriends... We were quickly disappointed. We sat at an upstairs table with a terribly rude waitress, short red hair who was very pretentious and made us feel as though...More

They say that Bob Dylon used to frequent this place and I didn't doubt it. It's a quirky place with great drinks at reasonable prices served by very friendly staff. Very busy on a Saturday night.

Right by City Lights Bookstore and Kerouac Alley, we slipped in for an after-dinner port to enjoy the beatnik quirky ambience of olden days. You gotta know what you're going for in a city like SF with so many glamorous options - this is for...More

We must have been unlucky and visited on the wrong day when the wrong staff were on. Very slow and indifferent lady behind the bar who didn’t want to serve us. But the main problem was when we eventually got our change (it took for...More

My cousin took my wife and I here after dinner one night and we fell in love with the place the moment we walked in. It's very dark and small, very tight quarters. We went upstairs and located a little table near a window right...More

A classic. Dark, dingy, friendly, loads of history, great bartenders and next door to the City Lights bookstore. This is not the Top of the Mark for the fur coat set. This is for your inner beatnik. Strong drinks and strong opinions abound. I've never...More

What a cool little place - right on the edge between Chinatown and North Beach on Kerouac Alley. This is where the beatniks hung out. Lots of character and really friendly bartenders.

This charming, polished wood, nostalgic bar celebrates beatniks, counter-culture and the good life in San Francisco. It's great place to hang with friends and people watch in the center of downtown.
