This was our first experience with City Guides, and our party of 8 went on the Golden Gate tour and thought it was wonderful! Our guide was super knowledgeable and we certainly learned FAR more than we would have if we had just walked on the bridge by ourselves. In the middle of the bridge, it was hard to hear... More

Look no further for a guided tour of the city of SF like no other. I am a Scout leader and the boys in our rural troop wanted to do a different kind of camp out-- something in an 'urban wilderness.' Now I've been the to city countless times, vacationed there with my family and figured I could easily walk... More

I've been to San Francisco several times over the years. This was my first experience with City Guides. It is a free guide service, staffed by knowledgeable volunteers who focus on one particular area. We took tours of the history of glass in the Financial District and steel in the same part of town...not the dry tours you might imagine!... More

Every time I come to the city I have to take one of their tours. I loved the tour of the great old Victorian houses in Pacific Heights. If you enjoy history, this is the tour for you!

Loved the Fairmont Hotel tour and the Glass tour. Stella and Robin are great tour hosts. Great way to spend time learning about San Francisco culture and history - we've taken several tours -always delightful!

We were in San Francisco visiting relatives who have lived here for thirty years. They were impressed as we were. We took the Nob Hill tour with Ken and enjoyed every minute. The tour took about two hours and started at the Stanford Hotel and ended at the Fairmont. Lots of interesting history about the wealthy and powerful men of... More

The free San Francisco City Guides, put on by volunteers through the SF Public Library, is a great way to see the city. Most of the guides are locals to the neighborhoods where the tours preside. You'll get a great history of the neighborhood and insider tips on places to see off the beaten path. They're a fun way to... More

Our school took a group of 28 students for a study tour to San Francisco and I was so really exceptionally fortunate to hook up with this organization and to our guide for the Chinatown tour, Dennis. The San Francisco City Guides who are volunteers, give free tours of San Francisco. I chose to do the Chinatown tour. Even before... More

Despite the rain on Sunday and Monday, we thoroughly enjoyed our time with Carlos and Beth are the two walking tours we did. Each lasted about 2 hours. The Guides gave us a historic background to the areas we walked while provided stories that made the history of the areas come alive. This is a marvelous non profit organization that... More

Staying in Civic Center

Neighbourhood Profile
Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.
