Balmy Alley is one of many art-filled alleys off 24th Street in the Mission District of San Francisco. While you're here, be sure to check out Lilac, Orange & Lucky Alleys as well. Also, stop by Precita Eyes to learn more & to get a mural tour.

San Francisco is a collection of many different cultures and neighborhoods -- none is as cool as the Mission District in so many ways. Besides the food, the artists here which are expressed in murals thorough the district are best represented here in this little alley -- made famous during the Reagan administration and El Salvador / Nicarauguan political/war struggles.... What a great location to stroll and enjoy a cup of coffee while observing the eclectic assortment of GREAT street art - some by very talented artists. The walkway is paved with pavers making it an easy stroll. There are all types of food establishments in the nearby area, as well as an assortment of coffee shops, too. Very enjoyable... More

Great artwork on the walls. Definitely worth going too versus pier 39 and the tourist spots. Short walk to mission street.

I love Balmy Alley and all its beautiful, colorful murals. I love looking at the murals for free. I love that Balmy Alley is in vibrant neighborhood, not for from a bakery with Mexican style treats. I highly recommend a slow stroll through Balmy Alley. (I've never taken one of the mural tours, but I think I would enjoy it.... More

So easy to get here. Don't join a tour group unless you want the play by play on each painting . Just take the BART and the walk. It's all part of the experience. Such great stories told through these paintings. Take the time, enjoy the murals and the Latino neighbourhood.

My teenager is an art student so of course this was a must-see for us in San Francisco. We visited early in the day and had the place to ourselves. Took an Uber there from our hotel which was super convenient. The murals are ever changing and there was such a variety of beautiful art. And it's FREE. A great... More

Although there are other interesting (some very good) murals in the surrounding vicinity, those found along the entire block of Balmy Street (off 24th Avenue) are particularly good. They are also seen more easily due to little traffic (please don’t drive through) and nothing in the way of viewing. As might be expected from street art, many have a social... More

My father has lived in the San Francisco area for more than 30 years and I've been there probably 30 times and yet neither of us had ever heard of or seen this little gem until now - how fun it was to explore someplace new together! The murals are eclectic - some fun, some political, and some historical. And,... More

A vibrant and varied display of street art. This narrow alleyway's walls, fences and garage doors are all used as a canvas. Even the flowering bushes etc were incorporated into some of the murals. Love it all!!! Very clean for an alleyway. A must see for sure if visiting the city, Highky recommend.

Staying in Mission District

Neighbourhood Profile
Mission District
From burritos to bicyclists, the Mission is the foundation for all things hip in the city. Cultural attractions, an independent arts community, sumptuous street murals and a high density of bars and cafes make this neighbourhood a magnet for young people. While terrific inexpensive food is abundant, its top-of-the-line restaurants now compete with the city’s best for fashionable diners. Indulge as the locals do by heading to Mission Dolores Park, buy some ice cream, and savor one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in the country.
