Macondry lane is located on the east slope of San Francisco's Russian hill. It's one of several streets that are actually stairs and walk ways. The locations lend themselves well to the somewhat bohemian life style that San Francisco is known for. The books "Tales of the City" was set on fictitious Barbary lane. The PBS mini series used shots... More

This lane is right up the street from where we are staying, so we decided to check in out on our way to the Cable Car Museum. The lane itself is very short, but quaint and quiet. I don't think I would make a special trip if I wasn't staying nearby, but it was fun to walk through, and it... More

It's easy to get to on Russian Hill using the Powell-Mason Cable Car line. Just 3 feet wide and obviously closed to vehicular traffic, you'll probably have the place to yourself. The street is maintained by the City of San Francisco. Enjoy the foliage, flowers, landscaped gardens of this quiet urban neighborhood. This is a respite in the middle of... More

I came late to Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City starting to read the first book after we had planned our trip. Having watched the TV series and starting book 5 of the series on arrival I had to go to "Barbary Lane" / Macondray Lane to visit the world of Anna Madrigal, Michael Tolliver, Mary Ann Singleton & Brian... First, it's clear folks who gave this experience a low rating messed up. I'm a native and it's easy to do The west end of the lane starts at Leavenworth and runs east across Jones and through to Taylor. Many folks make the mistake of walking the Lane from Leavenworth to Jones and think this is what all the fuss... More

Armistead Maupin's: Tales of the city tv series was filmed here which includes the steps to the fictional Barbary Lane. Beautiful gardens!! What a lucky place to live in San Francisco! Great views of the Bay from the steps!...Worth the hike!

Loved visiting this spot. I met the author a few years ago at a book signing/reading. I'll never forget the characters and locations he came up with. I'd visit this location before the stairs are remodeled or torn down. Lovely view at the top!

Even if you're not a Tales of the City fan this charming little byway is really beautiful and worth a visit. Pure San Francisco! For Maupin followers it has assumed almost shrine status. But sad to see on our latest visit this week after a few years that the iconic wooden staircase is looking so forlorn.

So pleased to have found this little gem. Loved the series of books and have read them several times. Pretty little walkway made you feel like you were in the real heart of San Fran. A must see for Tales of the City fans

It's pretty amazing when an author creates characters that become "friends". I loved the Tales of the City and the characters. Couldn't wait to see their "home". This quaint little lane is fun to visit if you are a fan. The views of the bay are amazing! Read the books and visit the lane that inspired Barbary Lane.

Staying in Russian Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
Russian Hill
Russian Hill has evolved into a chic residential neighborhood with outstanding views from every corner. Combined with several great cafes, restaurants, antique shops and boutiques, it’s easy to see why any visitor would gladly leave their heart in San Francisco. Cars line up day after day to drive down Lombard Street, the “crookedest” street in the world, and make the slow creep downhill past charming period homes. Polk Street is the main drag in this neighborhood, where you will find trendy bars, cafes and shops populated with locals, but for one of the most charming rides in the city, grab a cable car heading up and down Hyde Street.
