Do not miss this steps into the jungle just off the Coit Tower, a Little jungle alcove complete with bird sounds. My favourite discovery in San Francisco.

Napier Lane in the early 80's was a serene, magical, destination. A shaded respite from the heat of the city. It was planted in total growth of naturalized shade plants of ALL types and populated by many dozens of healthy, possibly feral cats, that lazed about in the most odd places. The homes were grotto-like Hobbit houses. It was peace... More

I think the person who wrote the first review has confused the sign indicating where Napier Lane is along the Filbert Steps with the Filbert Steps. From the various pictures I'm assuming the 000 and arrow on the Napier Lane sign indicate the distance and direction, in this case none as the signs are opposite the lane. I haven't been... More

Well, I passed Napier Lane several times climbing the Filbert Steps (it is a small walking "street" off the Filbert Steps that leads to some more residences); never thought that it was very interesting, but then I saw the review saying it is a "4" --- oh, I thought, maybe I am missing something. I made a special trip over... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
