The Vance Monument is fairly large and occupies a prime, you-can’t-miss-it site on Pack Square in the heart of Asheville. That makes it an important landmark. However, it’s an obelisk, and that makes it considerably less interesting as a tourist attraction. The obelisk is a radically simple design, being about as conceptually tidy as a monument can get. While it’s... More

The Vance Monument is located in Pack Square and serves as a good landmark to meet up with people. Knowing about Zebulon Vance, it seems that others are more deserving of a monument but history has the good and bad aspects. So in a way it seems fitting that the square is used for parades and protests that promote diversity... More

The Vance Monument is fine; it is located in a great area of Asheville and looks fine. Until reading the reviews I was unaware of the controversy arising from Vance having owned slaves. Perhaps the best response would be for diverse groups to use the Monument as a meeting place, likely causing the old bigot to spin in his grave.

They Vance monument basically is downtown Asheville amongst restaurants ,clubs ,shops ,and other items of interest. This monument does have some background that may be disturbing to some individuals but it is part of history.

we took an uber to downtown. lots of restaurants and a fun vibe. this was on our stroll. The weather was PERFECT for an evening stroll and this monument was our last stop. Don't make a trip just for this but if your trip includes downtown or the arts district check it out. Why do people rate parts of our... More

This monument is easy to spot because it is very similar to the Washington monument in DC. It's right downtown next to some government buildings and restaurants.

This is a great central location to meet with friends (you can't miss it) but I struggle with the fact that Vance was a slave owner. There has been outspoken controversy about tearing it down. It's not attractive even attractive. There are so many others more worthy of a monument in Asheville.

The monument might be a good landmark, as in "meet me there in an hour," because it's pretty central to downtown. The adjacent public art is more beautiful and interesting than the Vance Monument. However, as an historical place marker, it might have value, especially in these days. Vance was a slave owner, and occasionally an "artist" protests t with... More

The Vance monument immortalizes a man who was both a civil war governor of the state and a slave owner. There is a great deal of controversy around having this as the center of a liberal community. It is also where most political protests take place. A very controversial spot!

Nothing special to see here. It's in the middle of the square, with a nice number of restaurants around it, but the monument is nothing special. Reading the plaque you learn a little more of its history, but certainly not worth a special trip.
