I visited the Copp's Hill Burying Ground in November 2021 as part of doing the Freedom Trail from start to finish. This is the third cemetery on the Freedom Trail with the first two being the Granary Burying Ground and the King's Chapel Burial Ground. I think it is worth a quick stop to visit and take in the 360 view. It is on the way to Charlestown. Out of the three cemeteries on the Freedom Trail, the Granary Burying Ground is the most interesting because a lot of famous people are buried there. But the Copp's Hill Burying Ground has the best view. I would walk around for 10 minutes and then continue on with the Freedom Trail walking to Charlestown.

We wandered around the grounds here after breakfast, while waiting on the other stops along the freedom trail in the north end to open. It was cool to see how old some of the headstones were and learn about how people lived and died in the area. It’s quite a picturesque part of the city as well.

Copp's Hill is the last stop on the Freedom Trail before heading north over the river to Charleston. Being away from the bustle of downtown, this cemetery seemed a bit more dignified and peaceful than some of the others earlier on the Trail, even as many of the old headstones are heavily weathered and tilted.
While there, look toward the north and, foliage permitting, you'll be able to see the USS Constitution and USS Cassin Young about a third of a mile away, across the river at the Navy Yard.

While not as famous as the Granary Burial Ground, I found this cemetery to be a nicer place to visit. The lack of crowds and school kids running amok made this more of a solemn experience versus a tourist trap.
I found the headstones were also a lot more ornate and intricate in design showing the craftsmanship of the stone carvers from the revolutionary period.

Finishing up on a genealogical search for my g-g-g-grandfather, Isaac Dupee, I located his burying place as Copp's Hill Burying Ground. Isaac Dupee built the largest, most elaborate monument in the park in 1846 and was buried there is 1850. Isaac inherited the land from his g-g-grandfather, Walter Goodridge who purchased the lot in 1772. I am trying to find our who else may be buried in this site.
The web sites on the historic burying grounds are well depicted, but it would be helpful if there were some notice of where one might locate a list of people buried in these graveyards/cemeteries.

Beautiful, historic, convenient and cheap - what more can you ask for? This really is a necessary stop if you are doing anything historical in Boston.

After attending a Sunday service at the Old North Church, Copp's Hill Burying Ground is just a short stroll away. The British Army commandeered this site in order to lob shells onto the Bunker Hill area. A stroll around the graveyard reveals many still-legible gravestones from the 1660s and on. The modest cript of the Mather relatives is one of the notable burial sites there. I took my time and got in touch with the historical vibe of this special place.

I love old cemeteries, and this was no exception, but I really loved the interesting history behind this one. It's a Freedom Trail stop and definitely a must see.

Copp’s Hill Burying Ground is more than just an old cemetery. There are signs throughout with details about who is buried here and all that happened on this small hill 300-400 years ago. You can learn about Boston’s history with slavery and how images on the headstones evolved. They’ve done a great job providing historical context that’s informative and fascinating. So much more than just looking at old headstones.

As a heads up, I attempted to visit in August 2017. Website says the site is open 9am-4pm. When we arrived at 9:30am, Old North Church told us that National Parks service is frequently late in opening cemetery. When we called at 10am, we were told you must contact National Parks Service at least 14 hours in advance of visiting site. They claimed it was listed on their site, but to this day, I am yet to see this. Old North Church staff agreed, this was not a policy they were aware of either. Just a heads up in case you are set on visiting site, plan ahead!
