Considered one of the finest small art museums in the world, it did not disappoint us. It is exquisite what is on display, spanning 700 years. I had traveled a great distance to see Rembrandt van Rijn' Saint Bartholomew.

The museum is free and had an interesting war exhibit from Goya, Bellows and another artist. They have a Rembrandt painting. The marble is very beautiful.

We didn't know what to expect from this free museum, but we were seriously impressed! They have put together a fantastic collection. There was also a special collection on display of battlefield/war prints. We spent about 45 minutes to an hour in the museum, but if you don't examine each painting, you could go through the museum faster. If we... More

This museum displays a collection of icons from Russia, tapestries from France, and oil on canvas from America, France, Italy and the Netherlands. A highlight included Saint Bartholomew by master painter Rembrandt. It was a relaxing stroll to take in the beautiful pieces through the entrance and into four main rooms. This is a delightful intro into master works of... More

The atmosphere is lovely. The art is even better. Such a small space and so much to see! There are books in the lobby that are very explanatory. I recommend looking at them. What a gem!

It's easy to find and it's free. You know walking around the outside to get to the entrance that it will be special, and it is! The Timken staff is welcoming and the galleries are filled with treasures. One room has Russian icons from before the revolution. Another room has works by American artists. The real surprise for me were... More

The Timken specializes in European art, Russian icons and American art. Although small and only on one floor the museum has works by some master artists: Hals, Metsu, Maes, Copley and the only Rembrandt painting in San Diego. It is always free to enter. One could see most of the art work in an hour.

Privately financed Timkin Museum of Art in Balboa Park is always free (unlike the rest of the park's wonderful museums.) We go back regularly and always enjoy the special exhibits, as well as the incredible art collection. We just saw the incredible jeweled ornament collection -- more than 2000 ornaments on display.

so when private collectors make their acquisitions public in a great park (one of 17 museums in balboa park!), it's an interesting thing... this museum has flemish/belgian paintings; russian icons; some american masters and some other european masters - with their party piece (which they make a big thing of) being a 'death of mary' painting... it's free and worth...
