Well marked with good overlooks

We drove part of the South Rim so as to return in time for our jeep tour. The overlooks are very accessible (except for White House ruins) and the road signs are well marked.

This drive has a number of great views of Canyon de Chelly, and of course, Spyder Rock is a highlight.

It is now $ 30.00 for a pass to the park. It is good for seven days. Very windy but the canyon is always breath taking and beautiful. There have been some recent accidents so please use due diligence and common sense.

Worth the off the beaten path drive, easy to access, beautiful scenery and helpful natives. Affordable motel access inside the park at Thunderbird Lodge.

There are more overlooks on the south rim drive, compared with the north rim. It is a 37 mile round trip to the end of the paved road and then returning. We spent most of the day just doing this drive and stopped at every overlook. All the views are simply stunning with many of the locations being unfenced so... More

Lovely views and an enjoyable drive too. Peaceful and yet you have the opportunity to buy art or beadwork or pottery too.

Canyon de Chelly is one of my favorite places on the planet and have been fortunate to visit several times. The south rim drive provides great views of the peaceful valley below. You'll love the river and agrarian settlements below these awesome valley walls. Do stop at the visitor center and obtain a pamphlet that describes all the stops and... More

We drove the South Rim after we had completed a morning jeep tour. We were able to see parts of the Canyon where the jeep tour didn't take us. Road was nicely paved, and the look-outs were well-planned so that one could enjoy the overlooks. The only thing to look out for is range-free livestock crossing the road. Taking the... More

The overlook drive is about 15 miles to Spider Rock (a highlight stop) with a number of additional stops to allow you to see the canyon--FROM ABOVE. The emphasis is that it is nothing like being in the canyon! You look down on sites that are very small--bring a good telescope if you want to see into the canyon and... More

There are two roads into the Canyon and we elected to take the southern one so that we could see Spider Rock. The drive was nice and the road was in great shape. There were several good pull off areas along the drive to see different parts of the canyon. Would like to return some day and do a little... More
