Idy wanted to do this tour since The Before Times, so was thrilled to get a spot on my return visit in 2023.
Our docent, Mary Beth Betts, met us in the courtyard outside City Hall and took us all back to the days when NYC was still in its growing phases. We learned about how the site evolved, and about the, er, oft colorful characters that served as Mayor of NYC.
The tour visited the Governor's room and City Hall Council Chambers, as well as stops along the way to learn about the amazing architecture and interior design. Just delightful glimpses into history.
Our group was lucky, as the mayor himself had just completed a press conference before the tour began. Lots of staffers were still in evidence, and all were graciously welcoming.
A great insight into the early days of NYC, and how City Hall has endured into the 21st century.

I very much enjoy this part of town and often return to sit in the park in front of City Hall and admire the classic old buildings all around. One of the rare parts of Manhattan where old architecture has been nicely preserved and now it is in great shape. The City Hall itself is of classic design.

The City Hall building is in itself a very impressive building and it sits in front of City Hall Park. Great features and very distinctive.

Well you really can't get in or up close as there are security fences, but from the lovely park outside you can snap some good photos of the classic 19th Century architecture.

When I went with my family to NY, it was breathtaking! The pizza style and creamy ice cream is so delicious. In fact, you could enjoy any time, anywhere. The snow is deep and white, perfect to throw snowballs at friends and family members. Taking a morning stroll with your dog and hot chocolate in your hands is ideal but relaxing. I guarantee you will have the best experience in NY.

City Hall is the oldest City Hall in the United States, the architecture of the building is just beautiful.

Decent view from outside, building is in City Hall Park and next to Brooklyn Bridge. Great spot to relax, eat from food trucks, and people watch.

We didnt go inside. We just passed it as we were walking to another attraction. It is a beautiful building and worthy of a look if you are in the area.

While heading towards the financial district we stopped at city hall park to clearly check out the city hall and the Woolworth building.
The hall is lovely, reminds me of a colonial building and as I have read it dates back to 1812, I can only imagine how the city looked back then.
There are free tours to visit the interior of the building, but we were on a tight schedule so we matched on.
Definitely worth checking out

If you're going to Brooklyn bridge, this is at the end anyway. This building has been home to many an historic event in New York and American, so it definitely is worth seeing, but probably not worth it as the sole place to come. More classically European in design that most buildings in the city.

Where to find out about my family heritage? I went to the library the last time in New York but couldn’t find any information. I was told to try city hall.
How large is the City Hall in New York (length, width, height, how many floors, etc.)? There seem to be no technical specifications about the building.

Hi Bill,
I'm not sure of the size but most city halls are considered large office spaces to conduct the city's day-to-day business. The uniqueness of New York's City Hall is the Architecture and historical significance and paintings dating back centuries.
regards
Ted
