About
This national memorial managed by the National Park Service was the home of statesman and United States Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Restored and reopened in 2011, the public can enjoy exhibits on some of Hamilton's achievements and challenges on the ground floor, a brief introductory film on his incredible rise from an orphan in the Caribbean to an indespensible molder of the early nation, and visit the furnished first floor by scheduled tour.

Neighbourhood: Harlem
As a hub of African American culture, Harlem has played a vital role in the history of New York City. Today, the neighbourhood is as vibrant as ever as new businesses and developments go up next to local institutions. The heart of the neighbourhood is bustling 125th Street, where street vendors and historic landmarks like the Apollo Theater mingle with big-name stores. Turn down almost any corner, and you’ll discover some of the most beautiful blocks in the city, filled with handsome brownstones, soul food restaurants, corner shops, and scenic parks. For a taste of a real New York neighbourhood, it’s hard to top a visit to Harlem.

As one of the Founding Fathers, Hamilton is a famous figure and the museum at the site gives a good overview of his life and significance. As a historical site, though, there isn’t a whole lot here. It’s a self-guided tour of one floor of the house. Only three rooms are open, and they are recreations filled with mostly replica items. The house itself is nice but not exceptional, and nothing of historical significance happened here. The house itself has been moved (twice!) and is not even in its original location, so it’s not like you can “see what Hamilton saw.” And as the house is located on 141st street, it’s a relatively long trip to visit from Midtown or Lower Manhattan for what is actually here.Visited January 2023Travelled soloWritten 8 January 2023
- Annette pScappoose, Oregon82 contributionsWorthwhile visitWe really enjoyed our visit to Hamilton Grange. We got here before opening and got in on the first tour. Thank goodness, because a group of Scouts came in and the later tours filled quickly. So I'd suggest maybe showing up earlier in the day. There was some little things to see in the basement, then the tour of the house was very, very short - just three rooms and the entry. Though there wasn't a ton to see, what is there is well done and worth the time.Visited February 2023Written 27 February 2023
- ktbeenthere2015New York City, New York258 contributionsHours of historical meritAccording to NYCgo there are only 11 sites remaining in New York with a connection to this US Statesman. As part of a Hamilton themed tour, a visit to the Grange is a must. For those who are neither history nor Broadway buffs, the visit will be short, but it is free and in a part of town that is off the beaten path. Yet take into account the time it takes to get there and back. As others advise, aim your visit to coincide with the house tour. There are 2 films: one on Hamilton and the other on moving the house to its current spot. Both videos are worth seeing (they raised the house and moved it over a church!!).Visited March 2023Travelled soloWritten 13 March 2023

Fantastic introduction to 1800s NYC. Beautiful grounds and fascinating tales of Hamilton and his family.

Very interesting site. Casual and pleasant guides. Very little of the house open for visit and house needs better upkeep. Visitor center was closed due to staffing shortages. More money needs to go into the site given its historic importance.

Really the National Park Service staff was very personable. The self-guided tour was delightful. This is the third location for this summer home and the site is just wonderful.

The "little place in Harlem" that Alexander Hamilton and Eliza bought. If you're wanting to visit Alexander Hamilton's life after watching the musical, this is one of the spots! The interior has been closed since COVID but you can see a few things from the outside

If your adventurous check out Hamilton’s “little place in Harlem”. My husband and I took the subway from Midtown to check out this landmark. Not really a lot to say but you can at least say you went there if you’re a fan like my husband is. After that we walked down the main street where are the Apollo theater is and continued to central park and walked it all the way through . Don’t recommend going there after dark.

Website says they are open, but that a mask is required. We went to visit the site and it’s closed due to covid. Wish they kept the website up to date.

The website still gives the hours as though they are open, but the alerts page notes that the house is not (and thus, no tours.) Which they had made that more prominent. Had a nice time walking the grounds and explaining who Hamilton was using the placard to kid. Parking can be a problem, but as we got here early, we got lucky and found a space on Hamilton Terrace across the street.

When is the best time to visit Hamilton’s mansion? Also, are there any fees that you have to pay to have a guided or self-guided tour if so how much is it?

As others have noted, it is FREE (both self-guided and guided).... it was not crowded when we visited in August, so there was little wait.... and if/when you wait, there is the little shop, the self-guided lower level and a short movie to see..... worth the visit, as it is the only home Hamilton ever owned..... we saw it on the same NYC trip when we also had tx to "Hamilton" on B'way.... my grandchildren (ages 15 & 16) and I enjoyed it very much! A couple of things to note: (1) there is no elevator so one has to navigate stairs (not difficult) to see the guided tour upstairs and (2) it is open Wed - Sunday only, closed Monday & Tuesday

I would like to visit the Hamilton Grange National Memorial and the Morris Jumel Mansion in Upper Manhattan, but some friends have expressed concern about the safety of the surrounding neighborhood. I'm a 50+ woman and I usually travel alone. Also, this won't be my first trip to New York City; I'm comfortable with using public transportation and Uber, and I consider myself pretty streetwise. Any thoughts or observations from travelers who've been in the area?

You should have no worries whatsoever about the safety of the area. I can't speak to what it's like at night, but since the facility is closed by late afternoon, you would really have no reason to be there after dark. The area is remarkably safer than it was in years or decades past. -- you may find it a wonderful surprise to see how far Harlem has come along.
In fact, after my visit I walked at least 10 blocks south with two other women to a French Bistro south for brunch. I highly recommend Maison Harlem for a post visit meal out. By the way, I thought bloody Mary's there rocked!
