Neighbourhood: Upper East Side
Combining quiet residential neighbourhoods that have easy access to Central Park with world-famous cultural institutions, the Upper East Side is one of the most livable places in the city. Along beautiful Fifth Avenue, you’ll find Museum Mile, which houses many of the nation's most famous attractions in a single stretch, like The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Walk a few blocks into the neighbourhood, and you’ll come to Park Avenue, the poshest address in the city, lined with grand apartment buildings as far as the eye can see. Even if you can’t afford the luxury goods along Madison Avenue, it’s still a great spot to window shop an afternoon away.

- Susan LMarstons Mills, Massachusetts52 contributionsA treasureWhat a lovely little museum! Actually, not that little.. there was quite a bit to see. Everything was well organized and curated. We saw the exhibit of RBG collar photographs as well as a delightful exhibit on Coney Island. One of the highlights is a room packed with Jewish artifacts. Unfortunately, a school group came into that room and we had to vacate, but the exhibit had wonderful descriptions of the use and history of the artifacts. The museum is right off Central Park a few blocks beyond the Metropolitan Museum. Personally, I prefer intimate museums like this to huge and overwhelming museums like the Met. The museum has a small but nice gift shop that had interesting books and Judaica gift items. Some of the items related to the plagues were a little kitchy but it was a fun place to browse.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 March 2024

Warburg mansion, it has both a permanent collection as well as specialized exhibitions. I visited on a rainy Friday morning, as there were three current exhibits I wanted to see. The first was a replica of Frederick Kiesler's modern, innovative home library set up. Next up was a short history of Coney Island and its long-standing Jewish connection, told through photos and two carefully carved carousel horses. Lastly, several of the late Justice Ruth Baser Ginsberg's beautiful legal collars and jabots were shown, side by side with ornate tribal jewelry from all over the world. A great spot to begin your museum day, as I did, or round it off. And it's close to a sweeping view of the Jacqueline Onassis Reservoir in Central Park at Engineer's Gate.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 21 May 2024

Wonderful piece of archeology; but for Hebrew-readers it would have helped to have a transliteration into modern Hebrew letters, and a chart (e.g. the one the Israel museum sells) comparing the 2 alphabets).Visited December 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 December 2024

Several parts of the museum were closed when I visited, but it was free, and still a worthwhile trip. I’m not largely educated on Jewish culture outside of WWII, so this was very informative. Tons of artifacts covering multiple facets of the Jewish faith as well as art pieces by Jewish artists or with Jewish subjects. Interactive displays to teach about the artifacts. Simple and easy to follow. During COVID, they have complimentary styluses so you don’t have to touch the screens. No crowds, very open and clean, and nice staff.

This museum has been here for a long time. Over the years they were fortunate enough to have secured, collected and refurbished some of the most significant art pieces, paintings, silver, furnishings, first editions and so forth- in the world. It is preserved magnificently and retells the Jewish history pre and post Holocaust. Great for children of all ages as well as adults. Spend the day.

This small museum always has terrific exhibits—out of the run-of-the-mill mainstream, intelligently and creatively curated and informative. I discover something new at each visit. Their Leonard Cohen exhibition was beyond! Their shop is wonderful, filled with so many items that I want as gifts for friends and myself!. And delicious food at their restaurant.

My friend and I came here in the morning and spent about an hour in it. It was very nice and very clean. Since we were there in the morning, there weren't very many people there and it was quite quiet. Lots of beautiful artifacts and the Sassoon exhibit was wonderful. Highly recommend this smaller museum to anyone who wants to learn more about Jewish history or just go somewhere that isn't as popular as the Moma or Met. We also went on Saturday, which we learned was a free day!

This is one of the best museums I've been to in some time. Everything about it was spectacular and best of all it was free to get in on this particular day (Saturday). The museum is small, exhibits were beautiful, enjoyable and a great way to spend a morning. The restrooms are downstairs where you can find Russ & Daughters restaurant which has a lovely choice of wonderful yummy food. Be sure and check the hours on line as the museum and restaurant are closed on certain days. I highly recommend this museum!!

The Jewish Museum contains a nice collection of Jewish cultural & historical items on Manhattan's Museum Mile. Currently the museum has one floor of historical artifacts gathers from the last few centuries; an extensive set of computer terminals (you get a stylus to select items from a touch screen) next to each display case provides a lot of detail on each item. This collection focuses on the decorative arts (plus a related film on continuous run) as developed by various Jewish communities; this is less of a history museum.

This is my favorite museum to visit in New York. The exhibits cover many different periods of Jewish history across diverse cultures. It is amazing to see ancient and medieval ritual objects just down the hall from evocative modern art. Highly recommend!

Only 2 out of floors were open and the cafe was closed - yet still charged the full price to go in. This wasn’t apparent until we’d paid to go in.
Don’t go expecting to learn about the Jewish people in New York, it’s more of a contemporary art gallery.
Left feeling ripped off.

A perfect mix of old and new art work. The Chagall was my favourite but I was introduced to many new Jewish artists such as Michael Gross and Louise Fishman; and art of Jewish interest.
The painting of Gertrude Stein by Andy Warhol was inspired.
Cultural and religious artefacts spanning 2000 years were thoughtfully curated and the information was presented clearly. I was fascinated by the amulets in particular. Reasonably priced, a lift, free cloakroom and toilets made it a thoroughly accessible visit.
The shop sells original artwork, an impressive book collection, and hundreds of items from a dollar to a thousand dollars. I bought a tapestry mezuzah case amongst other things.
Can’t recommend enough.

The NYC Jewish Museum has a permanent exhibit with special exhibits. The unique V Sassoon exhibit had various portraits by S Sargent of the Sassoon family and old Jewish manuscripts on one floor. Learning about the V. Sassoon family's history from Iraq to India, shanghai, and England was fascinating. This exhibit is moving to another museum in August.

Hi Anna,
Apologies for not seeing this sooner--I hope you visited us! There is no need to pre-book a ticket for our exhibitions and the line is rarely long.
Best,
