I went there to look for heavy metal band t-shirts. It was a gem and it was beyond a few shirt stores. From tattoo to tobacco and many other accessories and counter-cultural lifestyle, one can still find items to have.

I know, all of NYC has changed. I graduated from NYU 17 years ago... I got my first tattoo on St. Marks 20 years ago... I went to Trash & Vaudeville like church on Sunday. These are the things you do on St. Marks, the punk center of Manhattan like Camden is to London.
Yoga on St. Marks? A fresh tea & juice bar on St. Marks? Oh the disappointment and sadness for the death of punk!
But, the Andromeda tattoo place is still there and a few other remnants. The kid smoking a joint on a stoop topped off my nostalgic smile.

Full of local character and history. Visited as my husband wanted to see where the rolling stones video was shot. Still looks pretty much how it was then.

St. Marks is one of the funkiest neighborhoods in NYC. A short walk from Greenwich Village or take the subway to Astor Place. Great local pubs and restaurants and funky shops. Lots of locals - not at all touristy like Times Square. Get off the beaten path and check out his East Village neighborhood!

So much history, art and culture to experience in this area. We found out a lot about the area and St Marks Place from the Lower East Side History Project walks that they do in the area - very educational. The history of the area in the Kleindeutschland period is fascinating, then leading through so many changes through the Beatnik poets, the hippies, the Punks - so much creativity in this small area throughout history and popular culture. There is also some significant buildings in the area - Cooper Union for example. The area is still slightly gritty but nothing compared to what it used to be - very much being corporatized but you can still sense a little bit of the old character of the area.

I only saw one chain (Chipoltle) amongst all of the local stores, eateries and attractions. There is still a hint of the rebel atmosphere that you think of with the East Village, but alas, you can see that this place too is becoming a high-rent neighborhood that will soon have Starbucks on every corner. But for now, it is still unique, quirky and very much worth strolling through.

I am a frequent visitor to St Marks Place. There are a number of stores and restaurants that my family really likes here. It is no longer the scene of counter culture and progressive thinking it once was, but still worth a look. I would encourage visitors to learn about the history of this street and nearby blocks. It is filled with stories. Abraham Lincoln gave a stirring speech at the Cooper Union Great Hall; President Obama has given two there. This street was a central location for the rise of the "Pop" art movement. Some of the first happenings and be-ins were here. This was one of Andy Warhol's and his crowd's playgrounds. Punk rock came later and was central to the area along with cool nightclubs and bars. Then, Keith Haring . Several famous album covers from rock bands were shot here. W H Auden, Lenin, Abbie Hoffman, and many others lived on these blocks at times during their lives. Many choices for food here and small eclectic shops to browse in.
