About
Avoid the traffic of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge by taking the free ferry to Staten Island, where you can marvel at the beauty of New York’s coastline along the way. The iconic orange ferry sails right through New York Harbor and is one of the best ways to see the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline. Snap photos, watch life pass by, and even look out for the Brooklyn Bridge in the distance. Upon arrival in Staten Island, be sure to visit the National Lighthouse Museum and the Empire Outlets mall, located right next to the terminal. – Tripadvisor

    EXCELLENT!
The Staten Island ferry is a FREE ferry, operating 24 hours a day between New York's financial district of Manhattan and Staten Island. The ferry is large, comfortable, with decks you can walk onto to take iconic photos of the Statue of Liberty. I can not recommend this enough, even if you just take the ferry over and then back again. Try to avoid rush hours (eg between 0800 and 0930 and 1600 and 1800) so as to have plenty of room for taking photos.

Free trip crossing the river with the best views
Rode the SI ferry on a Sunday afternoon. Not crowded at all. Stood at the back of the boat which gave the best views of the skyline as we pulled way from Manhattan and also fabulous views of the Statue of Liberty as we passed her. Whilst you don’t get too close, I felt it was close enough to satisfy the need to tick Statue of Liberty of the “to do” list. We had a quick walk along the prom as we didn’t quite make the next ferry going back, before returning to Manhattan. Best of all, this was free. Lovely way to pass time on a sunny day. Would thoroughly recommend.

    Fun and Fast
This was a great way to see the Statue of Liberty and the skyline of the city for free. We went at rush hour, because that's how it worked out in our schedule, but we got on the first ferry available and had a good view. It was easy to take the subway right to the ferry station. They make everyone get off at Staten Island, but we walked around and got right back on. Very happy with this experience.

Good views of liberty island on free, frequent ferry service
Excellent views of liberty and Ellis islands and the Manhattan skyscrapers. Regular service, I believe, day and night with minimal queuing. And most importantly it’s free! When I came 10+ years ago I paid for the tourist trip to Statue of Liberty. I queued for ages and then found another queue to get the return boat (I didn’t want to actually climb the statue). I later discovered the SI ferry enables you to see all that I wanted to see minus the queues and the cost. And it was much less busy too even at 9am on a weekday

Free trip to see the Statue of Libery and New York skyline
A great free way to see the Statue of Liberty and New York skyline. The Ferry entrance is near the subway. You have to join a large queue, then you can find seats inside and out with go8d views. It's totally free and a great ex0erienc3

Free boat ride - statue of liberty.
Free boat ride, good view of the statue of liberty and some outlet shopping at the other side. All good really. 5 stars. We travelled outside at the rail but plenty of seating inside and out.

A must on a tour of NYC
It’s a must. Try to go on one of the newer ferries I think as the older ones have less observation spaces. Board on the right if you’re leaving Manhattan to see lady Liberty. What’s not to love ? It’s free !!

    Free Staten Island Ferry Ride
Ferry itself was great. Second time I have done it. Was a huge crowd waiting to board the ferry and was all a bit of a rush for the best observation spots. Was same on the way back. Understandably they make everyone get off on arrival and you have to reboard to make the return trip but it would have been nice to stay on board. Photo opportunities of the Statue of Liberty good as well as of course the New York skyline. Warning to visitors unfamiliar with New York is that if you come from the commercial ferry side there are many ticket touts who are rather convincing that the only option you have is a ticket on one of their ferries. Believe a lot of people are caught out not knowing the Staten Island free ferry options. Yes perhaps you don't go right up to and around the island on the free option but in reality you will get almost as good a view as the paid commercial ferry option.

Free! A great way to see the Statue of Liberty
If you're not bothered about the immigration museum then there is no need to pay for a trip to the Statue of Liberty. Just take the free, every 30mins ferry to Staten Island for great views and not too busy. Just beware of the street entertainers outside the ferry terminal who con you for money - they promise a lot but are scammers.

    A must do in NYC
One of the best free experiences we did in New York. Excellent views of the statue of liberty and skyline of Manhattan. An absolute must, my family thoroughly enjoyed and the ferry waws so frequent. One point I would make though is directly outside the ferry terminal are sales people for the statue of liberty tours. They tried to put us off the ferry by telling us "this ferry takes you to another borough, is this really where you are looking to go, I am just offering this as free information for you, the boat takes you to a completely different borough". If I wasn't aware of this type of sales tactic from previous reviews it may have swayed me to wonder if it was the right ferry. I thanked them for their free information but told them I was happy with the trip I was taking.

Having visited New York 17 years ago, I had been inside the Statue of Liberty but didn’t really think all that much of it. I visited again this month but this time with my wife and she of course wanted to see it. This ferry does the job, it runs every 20 or so mins and gets you close enough to the Statue of Liberty as well as fantastic views of the Manhattan skyline…. All for free.

This is a way to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island if all you want is to see them up close but not get off there. The Ferry goes by both. Stand on right side going then left coming back. You can get off and run around to get back on but you must exit, you cant stay on. Did I mention its FREE?

Definitely worth doing, as it’s free and offers good views of the Statue of Liberty. However, for us, it doesn’t go close enough and we did another trip to Liberty and Ellis Island, later in the week. You need to be on the right side leaving Manhattan and the left on the way back, to get the best views Lady Liberty

Marvellous way to see the Statue of Liberty and … it’s free! As others have said, for the best views of the statue, sit on the right going out towards Staten Island and/or on the left on your way back. You also get wonderful views of the Manhattan skyline on the return trip. You have to get off at Staten Island but if you’re reasonably quick you can go through the terminal and get back on straightaway… there will be a member of staff showing you the way.

The perfect FREE ride to see the Statue of Liberty and the NY cityscape. Going to Staten the best position is at the right side of the boat. Going to Staten Island, is the best way to see the statue because it’s when the boat will pass closer to the statue. Then going back to NY, again go to the right side of the boat, this time to see the other side. Then go on front side of the boat so you can catch the perfect view of the NY cityscape.

If you are in NYC, this is a must do! No cost to ride the ferry over and back. It’s clearly not a “tour” with a guide, but it’s free! Gets within a couple hundred yards of the statue. Pretty quick subway ride from the theater district which only cost $2.90 each way and drops you off right at the ferry entrance.

Free ferry ride providing brilliant views of the Statue of Liberty. Having done this before the trip is as good as we remember. Also paid for a trip out to see the Statue on a previous city visit. This free trip was just as good. May be a little crowded

The Staten Island Ferry at Whitehall Terminal is a great way to see the Statue of Liberty and beautiful skyline views of Manhattan.

IMPORTANT NOTE: THE FERRY IS FREE! This form of transportation is provided as a free service, paid for by the city taxpayers.

DO NOT BECOME A VICTIM! The only negative to our visit was being confronted by SCAMMERS the moment we got out of our taxi! Men dressed in red uniforms, looking like some kind of park officials, were flashing their “SUPERVISOR” badges at us, insisting we could not go any further without buying a ticket. These Ferry Impersonators were aggressively insisting we needed to pay them, whilst shoving Credit/Debit card machines at us.

When we tried to politely decline their offer of an hour tour of the Statue of Liberty, one man started shouting insults at my mother and stood in my way, preventing us from traveling down a path that led to the FREE terminal.

Fortunately, we were able to cross the street and get away from him, but my mom, daughter and I were all a little shook. I am so glad I read online that it was free or I might have been a victim of this SCAM.

Just returned yesterday from what was otherwise a lovely trip to the Big Apple. Just wanted to make sure I came here to post this WARNING for you, my fellow travelers. Badge or no badge, these guys were bad news! I hope you can avoid them altogether!
