From its inception, Macy's Herald Square was a store unlike any other. Over the past 150 years, it has become a true New York City icon. Built in 1902, Macy's Herald Square was the first building to have the modern-day escalator, and it has continued to be a trendsetter. Today, "America's Largest Department Store" covers an entire city block with 11 levels of the latest fashions for you and your home. Macy's offers a full-service Visitor Center on the Mezzanine Level, plus restaurants throughout the store and exciting events almost every day.

Always a must see when in New York and a visit to the basement for some bargain clothes....disappointment this time as we found that it was closed off for refurbishment. Had a look at some of the other floors and most had sales but nothing tempted like a rummage in the bargain basement! Lots of renowned brands and price tags... More

What a waste of our time to visit this store. It has such a history that our teens wanted to go there. My one daughter, I feel, wanted to buy something just for the fun of it. Once we all looked at the prices we were appalled and left. It's quite honestly sickening to know that people spend so much... More

An employer said the store was closing so I took my goods to a cashier and she said she was closed. Tried another and another still no help. Disappointingly I had to leave my goods behind as no one would take my payment. Not good customer service at all, no announcement to say store closing and never known a store... More

Nice to see, some escalators remain old. The store is huge 7 or more floors, more than one whole floor of just shoes. Quite the store, but crowded, busy and not enough employees, nor bathrooms nor fitting rooms. Store clothing area in much disarray. Too hard to shop for me in this environment but was something to see and say... More

A huge store with lots of shopping and history. 9 floors of everything you could ever want and such history. Worth a good look even if you don't buy anything!

Overcrowded, messy, crazed but classic must visit when heading to New York for sightseeing. Great historical building where you can feel the charm (and layers of grime) of generations past. Great place to stop if you have forgotten an article of clothing.

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
