It's crowded, there's sawdust on the floor, the staff is amazing at getting you your beers and finding you seats at a communal table, and the history is all over the walls. Definitely worth checking out once!

Oldest pub in NY with massive amounts of history on the walls. It will be extremely busy between Thur - Sat and if you don't like getting bumped every few minutes, avoid the peak hours. Services is quick and no nonsense so please don't expect to be served a cocktail. If you like a genuine, historic pub experience, go no... More

Light or dark? Just two types of beer served in mugs (about 8 oz.?) that come two at a time for $5.50 for both. Sawdust on the floor and apparently every item that has ever been hung up on the wall remains there. Started in 1854. Lively crowd there late afternoon. Fun place to visit. I had the light beer... My wife and I had McSorley's on our list of places to visit on our recent trip. It was absolutely brilliant, and we loved the light and dark ales. At $6 for two beers it was some of the best value in the City to tell the truth. On your visit, ask the team why you can only get two... More

I love that this bar has pretty much not changed from the day it opened. Also love how it's not a hipster bar. It's a bar that serves just there own beer. The best !! Highly recommended.

Tip: This is a CASH ONLY. Maybe some other reviews mentioned it. But I was a dumbo because I didn't know when I went there. The bartender was funny as heck with a great accent. Irish, I think! (um...duh!). The server was very friendly and quietly witty. When I realized I didn't have enough cash on me (when will I... More

We went out of our way to visit this place and were so glad we did. Loved the history and atmosphere. It had such a friendly vibe compared to a lot of places we visited in NYC. The simplicity of the choice of light or dark ale was great. Excellent prices and great staff who kept bringing more drinks and... More

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
